Silencer on Air Compressor

It is amazing the stuff you get into Before the building begins.
I have talked "Quiet" air compressors to anyone who would listen.
The "body shop" guys tell me to put a silencer on the air intake port
if I truly want a quiet operation.

Searching the web I got the following description of a silencer:

"can be easily constructed from sheet metal. It just
makes the air do two 180 turns on the way into the compressor so the noise
can't get back out."

Can you buy these "silencers"? Where?
Has anyone ever built one of these sucessfully?
Is this a box kinda thing or could it be made out of some
copper tubing or PVC?

Ummm
THe motor and compressor noise dwarfs the intake noise on any compressor
I've ever had. And that is usually dwarfed by the airdrill noise...
They all had an intake air filter.

The only true way I've found is to build a doghouse for it out side and pipe it in.
And a maintenance schedule, check oil and drain tank on a regular bases.

Phil is correct, that's the only way!!! I even went one step further and mine's in the hanger and piped to the shop 60 feet away. I can still here it running and shutting off! Can especially hear it when the pressure switch freezes up and it's jumping up and down!!!
