Rebel cargo door - oops ?

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:38 pm

Sorry - I type faster than I read !! That was DOOR !!!

Yes - there are a couple of Rebels with cargo doors,
but I've never had much of a problem getting whatever I needed
in and out of the standard doors. Any mod like that is going to
be a significant time-gobbler in construction, and you might
want to run your drawings past the factory before cutting metal.

I hear that a Rebel really DID carry a moose out - with
only the standard door, and on floats, too !! ;-)

(Of course, we know it MUST have been a baby moose, or else
the Rebel <might> have been over gross, and nobody'd NEVER do THAT !!) ;-)

Hi John !

The Rebel comes standard with a full floor, all the
way back into the fuselage, so 2 people can sleep in back !

All,
I had the opportunity today to go over to Mike Kimball's
and poke around his Super Rebel...thanks Mike. I'm looking into
getting the standard Rebel (since I doubt I'll be needing to haul
a moose out of the bush) but was wondering about putting a cargo
door to the rear area, similar to the one on SR, on a standard
Rebel. Has anyone done that?

Rebel cargo door - oops ?

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:38 pm

I believe John is referring to an interior cargo door separating the cabin
from the tailcone. I don't know if MAM sells an interior cargo door kit for
the Rebel, but having purchased the kit for the SR and installed it, I think
it would be very easy to put one in a Rebel. Also, in hindsight, I would
not buy the kit from MAM if I had it to do over again. All you need is some
aluminum channel, small square tube aluminum, and some sheet aluminum. That
is all you get from MAM and the price is way more than if I bought the same
stuff from the local FBO, especially with shipping costs thrown in. Makes
me want to start supplying interior cargo door kits for Rebels. Just FYI, I
did not hinge the door as indicated in the manual. I installed four
camlocks instead, one in each corner to hold the door in place. Worked
great! If I change my mind later and want to hinge the door, it will be a
simple matter. But this way, the door is completely out of the way which
may help when trying to sleep back there. I would recommend a camlock to
latch the door versus the hinge pin called out in the manual. The camlocks
were very easy to install. I am hoping to put a floor in the bay just aft
of the cargo area to provide the necessary leg room. I am using a roof
mounted flap actuator so the flap cable that would normally be in the way on
an SR won't be there. Unfortunately, the battery might be back there
somewhere. I may try to put the battery one more bay back to help with CG.

Mike
