M14 Primer

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:22 pm

Don't know if it works for the M14 but on my UTVA's, that are GSO-480
Supercharged Lyco's and run 15psi pressure carbs, you prime the cylinders
and the carb about 4 shots each. Then crank with mixture cut off and when it
fires you go full rich. (The electric boost pump is also running during
this, but only to have fuel as soon as you go full rich adn give you fuel to
prime with).

What is used is a twin engine combined primer and the "left engine" is
hooked to the cylinder lines and the "right engine" is hooked to the carb.
Center is the "lock" position. Should be lots of those primers available
either new, surplus or salvage.

Hi Don !

I understand that the original Russian mechanical primer was
FAR easier to work with - you turn it one direction and pump to
pressurize the carburetor (it's a pressure carb), then turn the other
direction & pump to prime the engine. I think the number was 3 pumps
eack (it's a long stroke).... Those who use that system say it is
simpler and very effective. I guess once you've figured the correct
time or number of pumps for the right "combination", both work well.
