SR CARGO DOOR HINGE

Which is the best way to install the cargo door hinge? With the pin on
the outside or inside? MAM instructions are not clear but I think they
imply the outside.

If on the outside the door opens 180 degrees, however it's in the
airflow (looks ugly) and the pin is free to travel up and out without
being secured in some fashion.

If on the inside it looks cleaner however the door only opens 90
degrees. The pin is protected from coming out when the door is closed
due to the frame. May be some interference as leading edge of door
(ahead of hinge line) retracts inward when door is open.

I've installed mine on the outside as in the factory SR. I noticed they
frequently remove the hinge pin to allow removal of the door. I relieved the
edge of the post skin and the edge of the door skin to allow the top and
bottom of the mating edges of these skins to come neatly together at the top
and bottom. I've placed a picture on the archives site, it's in the
SR-fuselage section. I've attached a link that might get you straight there.

I did the opposite and installed the hinge facing inwards.. As you mentioned the door will only open to
90 degrees, so I will install a small strap from the frame to the door, to stop the door at say 85
degrees..

I'll be heading out to the hangar tonight.. I'll try to take a pic with the digital camera.

Thanks Fred & Dave,

I found a photo of MAMs and installed it on the outside. I butted the
skin on the fwd edge to the side skin and recessed after installing the
hinge, MAM calls for butting to the hinge which would leave a gap. Where
does one find .032 scrap as called out for stiffeners? Fortunately, I
had some .040 that I borrowed from work. I used it on the fwd edge as
well between hinge and bottom/top doublers. Also note that the lock hole
is 3/4" however the 5/8"sq tubing (only the tubing) needs to have >1"
(not 3/4") clearance for the lock backing nut.

Why did I only get 2 camlocks? should there not be 3? Why are they of
different lock numbers??? Can the original cargo area panel removed
after alignment be used as scrape?

I used the center section of the top door skin (that to be cut away for
windows). Be careful here as a mistake in positioning your cutout will cost
you a door skin. I was told the tailcone side skin removed to make room for
the cargo door was indeed scrap, so I've since used it for various things. I
got three camlocks, two for the doors, and a slightly different design for
the cargo door. I used a forth I had laying around for the cargo bulkhead
door to the tailcone area. Maybe I'll lock-up headsets etc in there some
day.
