Rebel Cabin Noise

Post by Rick Harper » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:03 pm

Hey Guys !

Been doing LOTS of flying in 541 R these past few weeks ..... :-)

and having LOTS 'n' LOTS of fun !!!

I'm up to 22.4 hours....(I have to do a 40 hour "proving period" before I can take passengers
and leave my 50 NM radius testing area).....and apart from the propeller trying to depart in multiple
directions ....there's been not too many problems to speak of....(STILL got an annoying, small
oil leak "somewhere"...but I think I've found it....at the base of the oil pressure sender)

The plane is a pure delight to fly and just keeps getting better and better as the engine wears in
and the temperatures settle down......(cylinder # 3 EGT goes a bit cold on full power climbout
...but I think it's just the way the mixture propagates...as it goes normal when I back off a touch)

The thing thats getting my attention now is the amount of NOISE ..(mainly drumming of the
flat panels...even though they are creased / folded slightly).....

I put some one sided , thin door sealing rubber behind the lip / edges of the doors a few days back
(to stop some draughts coming in), and was surprised at how much quieter it suddenly got inside the
cabin....

I was wondering if there was some LIGHT WEIGHT way of dampening the drumming coming from
all the other panels in the Rebel !?!?.........ANYONE out there got any useful suggestions ???

Those out there still building....KEEP AT IT....as Bob says, "it's really worth it !"

Rick I used premium carpet underpad on all the interior panels in my plane
it's a very lightweight closed cell foam that's charcoal grey in colour. It
made a huge difference in the noise levels and it looks kind of nice as
well. In canada it sells at the home depot for $6 a yard. I just cut peices
to fit and glued it in place with 3M spray adhesive. On the cabin side of
the firewall I used a fiberglass drop in ceiling tile. I peeled the plastic
off the one side and glued on aluminum foil then I cut it to fit and glued
it in as well. These changes lowered the noise in my plane from 118db. to
106db. since then I've also carpeted the floor and added tail pipe
extensions wich has made it even quieter but I haven't retested with the
noise meter yet.
