Also consider.. if this is indeed the shelf for the windshield to sit on...
it needs to be stainless just like the firewall !

Giving that "stainless thing" all much more thought today.. after dumping 4
quarts of oil out a cracked pressure gauge line yesterday, on a 75 mile
cross country flight home from ice fishing. Thank god for a 40 knot tail
wind that had me home 25 minutes early, as I didn't have 20 minutes left! I
left for home with 7 quarts and there's barely 3 still in there. The rest is
everywhere in the engine comparment and all the way back to the tailwheel.
Only bonus.. don't think I'll need to lube my die spring struts for a few
years!

From what I can remember it is intended to be fitted running forward from
the firewall by a couple of inches, sandwiched between the firewall top
and
the skin that covers the behind panel area running from the firewall to
the
top of the panel.

I think it's purpose was to prevent excessive heat from the engine coming
up
through the fibreglass cowling and marring the windscreen over a period of
time. It also gave you a bit more room to fit the windscreen, although I'd
recommend you trim the screen to keep the forward edge at least aft of the
firewall.

I've made an ali cowling from 6061 so I left the FUS-460 off.

Pretty spooky way to oil your tail wheel. Glad to hear you masde it.

This wind shield shelf FUS-460 is 6060 T6 I don't think it has to be part
of the firewall, ie. stainless if it only acts as a heat baffle at the top
back of the cowling. If the fire gets out of the ' stove ' it's time to
head for the deck anyhow.

What matierial was/is your pressure guage line and is there a restrictor
fitting in the engine.

If it's the part I think it is.. and as Nigel described.. it's the
strip/sheet that gets added to extend the "glare shield / panel top" out
over the engine compartment to allow the windshield to sit out there. If so,
that equals aluminum between the engine and the cabin.. with suspect flames
coming up the stainless firewall.... burning thru the FUS 460 and into the
cabin. Chances of it happening... pretty friggin slim. But pretty slim
doesn't pass a final inspection unfortunately against an MDRA inspector.

That extension also makes it an absolute pain in the ass working on the back
of the engine. Creative fitting of the windshield can keep it (and a
narrowed retainer) back on the original glare shield or on a very small
extension that gets used for nothing but picking up the engine cowling.
