[rebel-builders] Leaking Elite Tank

One idea mentioned at Bob and Anna's meeting today was to establish a
slight vacuum in the tank while applying thin proseal to the exterior
then removing the vacuum and letting it harden. I would probably make a
very small hole in the wing skin appropriately positioned to do this
since you know where the leak is. And for overkill I might also do the
following:

The picture you've painted in my mind is to position the wing so the
leak is the lowest point. Then adding proseal by brush or even brushable
proseal via a tube possibly from a 2 oz. semkit cartridge. Maybe get
some adhesion promoter in there first since this would be on top of
existing proseal.

there is a detectable leak - the balloon goes flat in 5 minutes or less.
The gas eventually emerges all along the trailing edge, so it looked like
the leak was either in the outboard end of the tank, or the rear bulkhead.
I used an inspection camera (with the lens on a flexible fibre optic
extension) to look inside for gas stains. I could see them aft of the tank,
but not at the outboard end. I couldn't see them well enough to locate the
leak, however. I turned the wing leading edge down and flooded the area of
the back bulkhead (which should be leaktight to a depth of 1/2" or so) and
pressurised the tank again. Sure enough, there are bubbles coming from the
bottom, aft outboard corner.

I am inclined to think that I might be able to get at that location with a
long flexible brush and some thinned Proseal and fix the problem without
cutting holes in the tank. What do you think, guys?

Ken:

I think I'll go with trying from the inside out to start with. I think I
can get a brush with a long bent wire handle in from the filler cap, then
pressurise it a little to force the material into the leak. But that
adhesion promoter sounds like a good idea. Right now, I'm trying to get a
source of Pro-seal in Canada. They won't ship it across the border. I've
asked Aircraft Spruce if they will take a special order.

ACS sells proseal... 890-B at least.... direct to your mail box. Just be
sure to tell them to check the darn dates before shipping.... or where you
talking about the adhesion promoter? They screwed my shop time up by 1.5
months by shipping me $450 worth of expired material and then I had to wait
for new stuff at Christmas to rebuild the wings I have in the shop.

If you think you can get to it with camera and extended brush.. go for it
from the inside! Nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Leah got me one of those nice inspection cameras for Christmas... I'll never
get caught buying a Rebel with cut stringers again.. I can tell you that!
(It's also great for ice fishing.. drill a 3/4 hole with a wood bit and
stick it in the lake.. no fish.. move on...

[rebel-builders] Leaking Elite Tank

I've gotten the Flamemaster equivalent via Aviall.
http://www.flamemaster.com/sealants.html, I believe AMS-S-8802 is the spec.

They get it from their Texas warehouse and the idea is one central
location so it doesn't get old sitting on the shelf in some out of the
way warehouse. Do remind them to check the date though.

If it wasn't obvious, I wrote that to indicate that I sourced it from my
local Aviall office here north of the 49th.
