prop for 150 hp lycoming

Post by karl hipp » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:55 pm

does anyone have a specification for a carved wood 2 blade prop for a
rebel with a 150 HP Lycoming?
I had propsinc.com carve me a 74 inch X 46 pitch. Hard Maple 5 ply. It
was turning 2480 rpm static runup, climb and cruise and the cruise was
86 kts ias at 8000 feet.
I wanted more RPM and Jeff, the owner, had me take a triangular sliver
off the trialing edge. 1/4" at the tip tapered to 0 at 12". The RPM went
up 40 RPM to 2520 but I lost 6 kts in cruise.
Then he had me take 1/2" off each tip and blend the back of the blade
where I had taken off the triangular sliver. The RPM went DOWN to 2460!!
Cruise stayed at 80 kts.

I removed the prop and measured the angles at the stations in from the
tip at 3 inch increments. The angles do not correspond on a prop chart
anywhere near the 46 pitch. Starting at the tip it is 41.8, 40.7 and
37.8. I think the prop is fighting itself because it was not
manufactured right to begin with.

Has anyone else had experience with propsinc.com?
He wants me to return the prop to him so he can rework it.

Does anyone else have a wood prop on a Rebel with 150HP Lycoming that
they can recommend?

Thank,

Karl Hipp
