more batteries

A couple months ago I recommended Canadian tires Y50-N18L-A battery. Since
then I've decided that it is unsuitable for use in an airplane. I've
managed to go through 4 of these batteries in just over 2 years. They only
have a 6 month warranty and seem very susseptible to having a cell fail.
Yesterday I bought a gel cell and I'll let you know how it works out once
I've used it for a while.

Hope you have good luck with the gel cell, but my experience with a GILL 30
certified gel cell is that it lasted 1 year in Howard's Rebel before it
wouldn't crank his O-320 more than 1 blade when fully charged! It was
returned to Aerospares and Howard was told that this is typical of that
"breed". They gave him a free Gil 25 to replace it and sent the Gel cell
back to the mfg!! On the contrary the normal acid filled Gill 25 battery I
bought in 1994 prior to completing my rebel in 1995 is still working
perfectly fine 5 1/2 years later and I have never had to add any water/acid
to it since it's original fill (I use a Honda Civic voltage regulator that
has voltage protection and failure light output, was a little more work to
wire but it seems to charge cleaner than the Chrysler style field
regulator). Howard has the same battery in his and it has been going strong
since 1997 (using the chrysler regulator) and hasn't let him down yet while
out floating around the lakes.

I know when we originally talked about batteries it was in search of a
lighter one so the Gil 25 isn't the answer for you. The (C.T.C.)Motormaster
Utility (lawn mower) batteries are about 6 lbs lighter than the gil and
available in two cranking capacities. The higher ones, (with two in series
to get 24 volts) have been cranking my UTVA's 340 H.P. Supercharged engines
over for a couple years now with a lot of sit time between use and haven't
let me down yet. My wife's CH701 has one of the lighter capacity CTC
batteries in it and it has been doing the same with a Rotax 912 for 3 years
now.

There's also that DRY Odyessy battery that I put in Charles Dixon's Rebel,
at his request. HOW'S IT HOLDING UP CHARLES???
