Subject: [rebel-builders] Landing Gear Failure

Today I had a landing gear failure on the right main gear. It was strange
as

we touched down after a small hop (1 foot high) and the right side main
gear

felt sluggish as if we had a flat tire. After opening the window and
looking
down

one could see the tire tilted out at a 30 degree angle to the ground,
meaning

almost horizontal. It was a job getting it back to the hanger.

The failure resulted in the right hand main gear leg (LG-44) just above
the
main

gear leg gussets. It seems to have sheared horizontally across - not sure
if
it

was at the bolt hole or above (was getting pretty dark by the time it
crawled back

in the hanger). There is a lot I do not know at the moment. For example I
do
not

know if the previous owner had a LG-33 and a LG-34 (main gear leg doubler)
as

part of LG-44, but suspect he does as he was a very careful builder and
the

drawing has that part circled. Also do not know exactly where it sheared.
I
will find

out Monday when it is taken apart.

So my question since my Rebel 242R (an oldie) was there any upgrade of the

landing gear since some of the early models were built to a 1450 gross
weight. Was

the landing gear beefed up when the gross weight was beefed up?

PS There was no other damage to the plane when the main gear leg broke

BTW.. for what it's worth... I had to drop mine in from about 4 feet up..
full stall on one ski to ever so slighly bend one of my gear legs back in
96. Not sure how high Howard dropped CYP in to bend that leg... without
noticing until he tried to taxi !

Wayne,
I was hoping that you would reply as I know your Rebel is 243. The pictures
look very similar, except mine sheared about 2/3 inches lower - no bending.
Must have been a hard landing in there somewhere. I have had to have others
fly off 25 hours on the plane (I was in the plane 1/2 of that time) before I
could start training for a private. My ultralight license is not good
enough. So there could have been some hard landings that I was not told
about.

Next question - where does one get new gear leg parts. Do you have any in
stock?

PS Those pictures make me sick all over again. LOL

[rebel-builders] Landing Gear Failure

Post by Gary Gustafson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:35 pm

Maybe I should have installed a video camera in the plane to
monitor their landings. When the gear broke, we (the instructor)
and I came in fast and skimmed close to the runway on a wheel landing
- no more than one or two feet off the grass - after the first
touch. Will find out Monday when I take it apart. Thanks.

LOL... I'll go look in the shop Gary. I don't think I have one.. but I think
I have some 1.25 x 1.25 x 0.125 tube stock left. Will confirm in a bit.

Sounds like one of your test flight boys tried to glide it in like a
Cessna.. ballooned it with stick back and went for the ride without slamming
in full power and dropping the nose!

[rebel-builders] Landing Gear Failure

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:35 pm

Okay Gary.. I thought I'd used it all up on Walter's canoe loader, but I
found enough under the bench that I can make 2 legs for you (or one if
that's all you want). I have a very mildly bent one here for a pattern and
hole distances (and a few others in the junk pile to make sure the length is
consistant).. probaby have a drawing in my pile from my original build as
well, as I measured/drew or traced every part when building my airplane.

I also have two gear leg "stubs" for the top fuselage attach. Do you need
one of those.. or are you using Gord Mohr's pivot blocks?

Let me know... I'm here 'till Tuesday for sure. Then probably gone back to
"chemoland" for a couple weeks after that.

I hope the material is the same or better than the original
and I believe that I need the insert doubler also if you have
that.

Looks as if you are right on as to the cause.
