[rebel-builders] Hole distance: Super rebel/Moose tailwheel stinger

I'm not either Ted... but I can fake it like a good women most days!

That's great news Wayne. I just didn't know if it was possible since
again
I'm not a machinist. Thanks for the tip!

Is why I said to use a milling machine (and a 4 flute cutter). I'd suspect
with the stinger properly clamped and any play of the mill bed taken into
account.. you can do those 1/4" holes without "wander".

Eduardo & Wayne,

The issue is the end of the stinger center-to-center hole distance, not
the
individual hole size. The current center-to-center distance is 1 3/16"
which needs to be 1 1/4" to mount an AK Bushwheel or Scott tailwheel
assembly on the MAM stinger.

I traded emails with Dale Fultz who says his machinist can drill one hole
1/16" to one side, if I recall Dale's comments correctly. My machinist
buddy says that can't be done since the drill will want to walk--the
drill
won't just cut on the one side.

Another A&P friend suggested putting a pressed (1 thousands oversize) pin
in
and then drilling a new hole from scratch. Another machinist friend (a
friend with a milling machine--not a machinist business) suggested
perhaps
welding the existing hole then redrilling from scratch.

I'm not a machinist nor am I a metallurgist, so I can't recommend any
solution with any definitive knowledge. I'd suggest one talk to local
machinist shop experts and get their advice.

As a side note, I can't for the life of me understand why MAM went with 1
3/16" since I have yet to see any vendor with anything other than 1 1/4"
center-to-center on their tailwheels.

I'm at a loss then why you'd fill them at all if MAM's uses 3/16th and
AWB's

uses 1/4" bolts. Use a mill and bring the holes up to 1/4" referencing
off
the edges of the existing holes that face each other. There is a 1"
distance

between these hole edges for either tailwheel then if MAM's spacing is 1
3/16ths and AWB is 1 1/4" !

Hi Ted: I'm in the middle of doing something quite similar to your
setup;
question: how do you "fill" the 3/16" hole on the stinger. I understand
it
should NOT be filled with any welding process, but just filled with a
3/16"
pin with a force fit and then re-drilled to 1/4" and 1/16" further away
from
the other hole so as to make the distance 1-1/4" because the Alaskan
Bushwheel has 1/4" holes and are 1-1/4" apart while the original Murphy
stinger has 3/16" holes and 1-3/16" apart one from the other. Is this
clear,
or just mumble jumble?.....it makes perfect sense to me. I just figured
this
out a minute ago, and I hope you can endorse this procedure. Thanks a
lot,
regards, Eduardo

Hello Jason,

I might have one. Have to look in the hangar. Unfortunately, the std
Murphy bold spacing is 1 3/16" if I recall correctly. I too use an AK
Bushwheel assembly; I had to have a machinist first fill then redrill my
current stinger.

Guys,

Short story: I need a new tailwheel stinger...either factory or
aftermarket.
Anyone have a used one they want to sell? I want to use an Alaska
Bushwheel
tailwheel and the bolt spacing is 1.25 inch.

Or...does anyone know what alloy and if there is any heat treating
applied
to the Murphy stinger?

Thanks, -Jason
