cold weather float fling

Post by The Halls » Sun Feb 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Hi , I have quite a bit of float flying (over ten thousand hours). I find if you take off from a lake then climb out to almost freezing level your brakes have a good chance of being frozen. On the Canso (PBY) we used to open a small hatch by the wheels and try and turn the wheels with a crow bar.If they didn,t turn I would do a water landing before landing on wheels. On smaller amphib airplanes this is not possible . I found that if you have operated at near freezing temperatures after taking off from a lake or slushy runway I would go and slash down in a lake before landing on wheels. It would be very embarrassing to land with frozen brakes. Good luck . Bob
