Hi fellas! Hope all, who celebrate such, had a great Thanksgiving.
I'm about to attach my tailwheel assy. and recall that there have been some issues with the MAM unit. Am I remembering correctly that the demo plane is not using the tailwheel that came with our kits? Does anyone know the nature of the problems? I've been looking at the XP Mods tailwheels. ( http://www.xpmods.com/compare.htm ) It occurs to me that those units look real rugged and would make a heck of a statement on a Moose. Anyone out there have experience with this tailwheel?
I hate to start making mods, before the darned thing is built, but I'd rather make a change before there is damage to repair. My Moose will likely never see Alaska style environment, in terms of rough field use, but not all my landings are perfect (don't say it, Jason..) and I'd like to be confident in the equipment. If I'm wrong about percieved troubles, I'll be even happier.

Moose Tailwheel
I have not had a problem with the MAM tailwheel. I had to change the mount hole to the lowest hole on the mounting bracket. I think I remember the instructions saying the second hole from the top. You want the swivel part level when the airplane is loaded.

I had a 14" XP tailwheel on my 185 which was one of the first ones XP made in the late 80's. It is a great tailwheel for the 185 but only with 29" tires as it otherwise inhibits the angle of attack on the ground. It also keeps the stab off the ground more and out of the rocks thrown by the main wheels. Downfalls are it is heavy, takes a lot of brake to get the tail to swing, and shimmies on pavement without a tailwheel lock - so swing the tail by hand when necessary and hold the tail up when landing on pavement.
The Moose stab is plenty high off the ground but the tailcone is weak - no doubt. The demo had cracks in the attachment bulkhead and doublers were added. I am saving that area to see what MAM comes up with but have plans if they do not.
They have a Elite nosewheel on the tail of the demo I believe.
The stock little tailwheel is probably fine for airport only but you should then stick with small main tires also.
Daryl told me he would like a fatter tailwheel than the Elite setup rather than taller - I agree and hope he makes one as it is easy for them to do. The Gar-Aero tailwheel is a double wide fat tire Scott 3400 but has its drawbacks as well.

to put the airplane through !
I had no problems with handling with the small standard tailwheel
on pavement or grass strips - in fact, the grass was better, as the
only problem I saw was that the tire wore very quickly with heavy loads,
on pavement. (Seemed like about half the tread was gone over one
summer...) The modified Elite nosewheel on the prototype seems
to be a good solution for most flying - just remember to carry a
spare tube, as they can be hard to find.
As for cracks and doublers on the prototype, these may not
be significant. Remember, this airplane has had 2 completely different
engine setups, a major airframe upgrade, and several years of pretty
hard flying ! (And some damage occured BEFORE it flew, being trucked
to display at airshows ...) The benefits of all that R & D flying
are being passed on to builders already.

Moose Tailwheel
If 800 hours is several years of pretty hard flying I guess I'm in trouble
for the long term. The tailcone on the demo is identical to the fast-build.
I saw it and the cracked bulkhead when it was apart. They all admit it is a
weak point and it has not been dragged through the rocks yet.
Cessna started with 7/8" then 15/16 then 1" and finally 1 1/8" stingers on
the 180/185. Most of the 7/8 broke right upstream of the wheel long ago and
have been replaced with 1" from Cessna or XP. All of these stingers (or
springs) are tapered so are stronger and thicker midpoint than at the end
where the wheel attaches. MAM's is 1" full length and is only attached at
the forward bulkhead - Cessna at the midpoint with 2 bolts in a saddle. Keep
in mind the Moose is a slightly heavier plane with higher gross weight and
load capabilities.
Somebody mentioned harmonic vibration at the stab - the blades on the demo
prop have been 2 degrees off until recently so 300 hours with out of sync
blades. Robin says it is very smooth down to low rpm now>
I would not own a stock 180, 185, 206, Super Cub or Beaver as none were
designed for off airport abuse. Nor did I expect Daryl to design the Moose
just for me.
You go ahead and leave your plane factory stock Bobp.

Hello Eduardo Welcome to the list. I hope you stick around and share yourHello Gentlemen (Ladies?): I'm new in this list; I've built a Moose and I've
flown 298 hours till today; It's a great aircraft, tricky to land and the
factory support stinks, like they never cared what happens after they sold
the aircraft kit, no response to e.mails and worse even, phone calls. The
tail wheel's mechanism is weak and I cannot get a decent response from
Chilliwack for a set of parts. I am thinking about adapting a Scott 3400
which I assume will be strong enough for the size of this aircraft. I fly in
South America, mainly Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil. Any comments? Regards,
