[rebel-builders] Gas Tanks

Post by N.Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:32 pm

Hi Jim

I've seen an inverted U tube facing forwards added to the filler caps on
some, and actually fitted in the top skin on one.

I've gone for new filler caps with venting integral for mine, but it's a
larger size filler (3")

We have been given the green light by the MDRA to close up the first wing.
However we have not been able to find anywhere in the plans that show how to
vent the gas tanks. Can anyone help me out there?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim

My manual had 2 un-numbered pages titled "Fuel Tank Cross Venting" designed
for those who were installing the flush mounted non-vented type fuel caps.
Let me know if you can't find them and I will scan them and send them to
you. I plan to install the standard caps with periscope type vents, some
thing like Nig has described.

[rebel-builders] Gas Tanks

second try...

There has been much discussion on venting. Most rebels seem to vent
through the filler caps one way or another. I found that an inverted J
tube will flow a surprising amount of air into the tank and out of the
MAM supplied cap internal vent or out of the holes in the filler neck if
you drill those. Apparently some of the supplied caps may not be vented
but mine are although it is not obvious. My single inverted J tube into
the cross vent is now bent almost straight down to reduce the airflow.
That helps keep an air mixture in the tank that is too rich to explode
and it reduces the venting of hydrocarbons overboard.

Anyway at this point all you need is to make sure that you have enough
ports for cross venting (if desired) and fuel return (if a rotax or
injected engine) without sharing any sight gauge or fuel return
connection with a vent or engine feed port.

Some guys fit a mechanical fuel gauge to the inboard rib instead of
using a sight gauge. Some even fit electrical fuel probes but I sure
like simple. My sight gauge is marked for both in flight and on ground
attitudes which is something I've never seen done with an electrical gauge.

One of the nifty functions of using my EFIS/EMS to display electric fuel
gauge levels is that after calibrating the EFIS for each tank level in both
ground and flight attitudes -- just as you'd do with sight gauges -- the
EFIS display automagically changes from the tail down ground calibration to
flight attitude calibration when airspeed exceeds 30-35 MPH. No chance of
glancing at the wrong range scale up on the wall. Simple! :)

There is a plethora of discussion points on the how's and why's of various
venting schemes in archives, which should be studied. After digesting that
more than once, I settled on the bent "J" or snorkel tubes on each filler
cap, in addition to cross venting, supporting gravity feed only with no
pumps. (The AeroCarb is happy with as little as ~0.5 PSI).

Charlie,
I didn't get those pages so if you would be so kind as to forward them to me
it would be greatly appreciated. Also I have discovered I have no
information on the pito and static line either. What are ppl doiing with
those?
