[rebel-builders] wing trim tab

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:32 pm

I've seen small fixed trim tabs placed on the tips. They are then bent to
find the correct angle.

My left wing has always been a bit on the heavy side so I want to add a trim

tab to it. Is the best place on the wing tip or flaperon? Anyone have any
pics
of what they did

Ray

[rebel-builders] wing trim tab

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:32 pm

Hi Ray !

The best place would be on the left wing tip, bent down.
Use Lexan, rather than metal, and round the corners -
these things can cause serious injuries !! If you make
it 5 or 6" long, it needn't extend more than an inch,
with a small bend.

Another alternative is to bend it down & around at the back,
so it is actually almost a shallow triangle, and fasten it to the bottom
of the tip, not extending out at all - a bit safer, but harder to adjust.

Unfortunately, this is a common problem - usually because
the wing tips are not identical .... Often going to Dave Fife's
Hoerner tips solves this problem, as well as improving performance.

[rebel-builders] wing trim tab

Ray

I use BobP's suggestion of a small bungee cord on the control stick and
keep more gas in the right wing but something better would be nice. I
have the Fife tips and it flies perfectly straight power off. The more
power I use the more the spiralling prop wash lifts the left flaperon
and the more it wants to turn left. My Warp prop might be worse than
other props for this since some rebels apparently do not do this. The
effect is less noticeable with reflexed flaperons but I rarely use reflex.

Anyway I wonder if a bent down trim tab in the propwash on the inboard
end of the right flaperon might tend to be a bit self adjusting. ie more
thrust would have a slight tendancy to raise the right flaperon. Of
course that is likely a bad place to put a tab for walking into it. The
location lends itself to routing a cable for an adjustable tab though.

If I had extra wires in the wing I think I'd try an electric adjustable
tab on or near the right wingtip. Maybe if I ever remove the wing...

Ken

PS - finally managed to get cooler air into the soob engine intake and
managed to pick up some more power and cooler egt's but had to remove
the vacuum pump to do it.

I thought that the best place to put a tab was on the rudder. A small
amount of yaw will correct a roll tendency.

Thanks Bob

I on amphibs so no problem with someone walking into it. 5-6" long but how
wide and fasten it so the back is 1" past the end on the tip? Do you just rivit
it on? Make the bend about 1" from the front?

Can you email a part list for the 1800 amphibs. I want to see if I can get
some parts from MAM.

[rebel-builders] wing trim tab

Post by Billy Corbett » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:32 pm

Help !! I need to identify the alloy, temper, and thickness of the Rebel main spar. Looked through the builder's manual and the only
reference was by part #(W-112) E-mailed the Murphy site and called them , no response. Need same info on wing skins. I am trying to
make a repair in the area of the strut attach fitting and need to order material to make a sandwich type doubler as described in
43.13 and Cessna's service manual. Thanks for any and all help with this. Bill Corbett Spotter37@cox.net

Hi Bill,
My kit (818R) has .063 thick main spars and I believe the material is
6061-T6, hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I believe some
Rebels may have thinner main spars but don't know details.
My wing skins are definitely .020 6061-T6, and the tank skins are .040
6061-T6.
Hope that helps. Cheers Mike
