[rebel-builders] Spring landing gear and tundra tires

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Thanks for the reference. Our "bungee" gear is also subjected to
increased axle loads when fitted with larger tires. They increase the
bending and twisting loads on the struts. Some folks feel that the
lower tire pressure compensates somewhat but I'm not a believer in that
theory.

[rebel-builders] Spring landing gear and tundra tires

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

The bigger tire plays in by swallowing the terrain (at least with a
bushwheel).. where a normal tire would dig and the gear would fail. Ie you
couldn't land there in the first place on the normal tires. That said.. the
bigger the tire.. the longer the moment arm when you slam on the brakes, or
really stick one into a gopher hole, you bet ya something is gonna give. It
would on a small tire too.. but the increase moment arm of the bigger tire
isn't your friend. Also easier to go over on your back with brakes locked on
the bigger tires.. as many supercub fellas have found out. If you are going
to put big tires on a Rebel or Elite with spring gear... I highly suggest
that your Fus-5's have been modified with solid inserts... a 3/8 bolt in at
least the front saddle holes and the angle reinforce plate as well. The
Elite I have in the hangar right now has a really nice mod... with bath tub
fittings riveted to both sides of the uprights to pick up each saddle bolt
as well. About as bullet proof as you can make the design...short of going
with the "Alister train trestle" link!

We've discussed this pretty good today on Supercubs.org and what everyone
would like to see is a break down of how many REAL incidents there are.. and
in what landing configuration. To lump them all together.. tundra
tire/skis/etc is useless. Cessna 180/185's have always been prone to axle
bolt failure when on skis, and why you are supposed to be running solid
axles with 6 bolt flanges and NAS bolts... but many dont'. Do the "incident"
tallys differentiate?

I personally think there is more to this then meets the eye. They stopped
doing field approvals of tundra tire installs for guys unless in Alaska.
Someone high in the lobby industry is whispering in someone's ear to get rid
of the big tire approvals all together ...to stop the bushwheel crowd from
playing in "their" back yards (crown land/parks and such). Just my
thoughts..
