[rebel-builders] Vert Stab offset and dorsal fin

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Hi Roland !

FWIW, lots of us have found that it's a LOT easier to just build
the vertical fin in the center. No matter what offset you do, it will
only be good for one speed and power setting - and it's a lot easier
to mount the fin centered when it comes to do fairings, etc....

It's a good idea to add a trim tab extended from the back center
of the rudder anyway - worst case, you might have to bend it a bit
for hands-off flying .... about 2 - 3" wide, about 6 or 8" high -
rivetted to ribs & skin - maybe a few holes to ease bending...

Just thought I would ask before I drill too many holes.

Also, should I wait until the very end of the build to install the dorsal
fin?

[rebel-builders] Vert Stab offset and dorsal fin

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:23 pm

Yep.. as Bob points out centred is just that much easier. As soon as you
turn that tail post a few degrees, to offset the front attach, the distance
between rear stab attach fitting and the Fus-36 bulkhead changes for each
side. Makes one side tight for stab fit and the other side ends up needing a
spacer. It throws you off considerably trying to get the stabs mounted
straight as no matter how close you are.. the front fin attach being off to
one side makes everything look wrong.

I have found the best way to align the two stabs is to take an 8 foot
straight edge.. ie a .025 sheet scrap or similar.. and tape it to one stab
about 2" from the rear edge.. and then align the other stab to match. Then
take some measurements from wing and/or gear attach fittings on each side
and adjust the assembly until you get it perfect perpendicular to the fus
centre line... before drilling into the Fus-36 for the front attach bolt
locations. I've also found that 0.8 degrees nose up is a better stab angle
than the manuals 1.0. Also.. only ONE bolt in those front attach fittings.
That predrilled hole is a tooling hole... do not use it to put a bolt in!!!

The cleanest way to mount that dorsal fin, if you feel the need for it, is
to leave the rivets out of the front Fin spar up to the first row of rib
rivets... and you share those holes with the trailing edge of the dorsal fin
skin.

Rudder trim... tighten a pedal return spring on the side that needs input!

What !!??? ....And MISS the last Rebel Builders Meeting until
September ???!!! ;-)

I know - tough choice ! :-)

Angus & Chris are coming - I suspect by air, though ...
you'd have to ride on the floats ! ;-)

The weather looks great for tomorrow, so we're hoping for
a good crowd of fly-in Rebels, and maybe a Moose & Elite ...

Keep rivetting Roland - and maybe you can FLY in to the
September meeting !!! :-)
