This is a left wing question about the stringer brackets that attach to the
fuel tank end rib. The instructions call for those brackets to go inside
the rib flange. How did you fit those brackets and rivet in place on the
left wing?
Any suggestions for fitting the top skin under the tank skin where the
tank skin is riveted to the four stringers?

after the proseal started to set up but it did leave a space for the wing

I'll be able to get it out easier.

Just a thought - if these are the little pieces with the "J"
shaped cutout to seal around the stringer -

It would seem sensible to have them on the "fuel" side of the
bulkhead, so that any weight of fuel pushing against them would tend
to make them seal tighter against the rib ....

(if they were on the outside, the weight of fuel would tend
to tear them off the rib, creating a leak ! )

For what it's worth, there ARE Rebel builders who have put these
fillers on BOTH sides of the rib, with a sandwich of ProSeal in between !
They also reported that the seal is best when the opening in the J is
loose enough to allow ProSeal to squeeze out around it - those that
fit too tightly tended to leak !

I assume your talking about the ones on the #4 rib. I think on the outside
is better and heres why. If you put them on the inside, you would have to
rivet them in place _before_ you put the top tank skin on. How do you then
get the proseal in there to do a decent job of sealing?

Now, if you slide them on the stringers and leave them hang between the #4
and #5 rib, you can go ahead and rivet the top skin in place. Then the last
thing you do is blob proseal on the stringers, #4 rib, and the underside of
the tank skin and then slide the plates through it into place. The proseal
will dam up against the plates as you slide them in and seal good. Rivet
the plates in and turn the wing over so the sealant does not sag away from
where it's needed.

Hi ,
In both wings the clips (or brackets) to seal the tank should be on the
"tank" side of the ribs. As far as the stringers go the skin can be slid
under the tank skin with the tank built.

We understood the manual to say that the brackets should be on the flange
side of the tank rib on the bottom (the top brackets have to be on the
outside of tank), therefor the right wing with the flanges facing the "tip"
would have the brackets on the outside and the left wing with the flanges
facing the "root" would have the brackets on the inside. What is the
correct procedure?

The clips or "brackets" go on the tank side of the ribs although it doesn't
matter, the pro seal is so strong the aluminum will probably fail before the
sealant. Put the clips INSIDE the tank .....I built the SR prototype wings
and I didn't even put flanges on the clips and the tank is fine.

Joel,
I fabricated a temporary cap strip about 3 inches wide that acted like a
local top tank skin. Once clecoed in place to the #4 rib and the stringers,
it held the stringers in the proper location with respect to the outer tank
bulkhead (aka #4 rib) and top wing skin, and kept the squirrelly outer tank
bulkhead nice and straight. It allowed complete access to both sides of the
stringer as it passed through the tank end. I put the sealing clips on the
j section on the inside of the tank for the same reason that Bob suggested.
I then Prosealed and riveted the clips and Prosealed the stringers to the
clips as they passed through rib #4 EXCEPT on the top against the temporary
strip I used. This is easier than it sounds since the clips and stringer
flanges effectively masked most of the area against the temporary strip.
After the Proseal dried, I removed the temporary cap strip. The stringers
were securely Prosealed to the stringers, clips, and bulkhead. This left
everything sealed and secured in place except the tank top. It was then a
simple matter of gooping up the tank top, and sealing and riveting it in
place.

I'll check through my photos and see if I can post anything more graphic. I
doubt it though. My camera would have probably ended up getting permanently
Prosealed to the latex gloves or the tank if I tried to do any photo work.
Besides, I used up all of my good swear words on the sealant by this time
and had none left for the camera!
