Wing Root Fairings

Post by Kirk Palmer » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:14 pm

I was asked for advice off the lists but to give everyone a chance to see/object/contribute to this I figured I'd just post it as a new thread.

What I'd do to prep for creating a top fiberglass fairing for the wing root would be to use clear packing tape to bridge the gap between the wing and fuselage as well as the rest of the area you plan to glass. It'll take a bit of patience to go over the whole thing and avoid wrinkles but it's worth it. My advice with that stuff is to use small pieces so it's manageable, especially if you're working with domed rivets at the wing root. Spray mold release is plenty with packing tape, you can almost get away with not using anything. If you've got domed rivets and want the glass to lay around the heads snugly (which I probably wouldn't bother with, but that's just me) I'd do the layup with 4oz cloth. If you're not too concerned about it fitting to each head exactly you can buy rolls of tape that's either 6 or 8oz (not sure which) in various widths. The thickness of the finished product depends on you, though for obvious reasons it should be at least the same thickness as the rivet heads so
you can hide them. Poly
e
ster resin is the way I'd do it, you don't need the strength of epoxy and it's about 1/10th the cost.

Hope that helps
