[rebel-builders] Elite Elevator Mods

Post by Robert Johnson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:00 pm

Hi Bob: Nice to see someone else getting rid of the "square" ends on the
tips. We have done the same thing to the elevators and rudder of the Moose
we are constructing. I have not had any experience with an Elite, but your
elevator horn beef up sure looks like the 3500 Moose construction.Nice work.

[rebel-builders] Elite Elevator Mods

Post by Robert Andrews » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:00 pm

Thanks Bob.

The elevator tip is as solid as can be, but somehow in its construction I
got an ever so slight twist in it. I'm debating whether or not to re-do it
or make the one on the other side have an equal twist in the other
direction. I discovered it looking straight on ... almost undetectable
veiwing from the side ... decisions decisions ... hmmmm. Could be a feature
that ends up improving performance ... ya think? (hehehe).

[rebel-builders] Elite Elevator Mods

Post by Robert Andrews » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:00 pm

Bob,

Here's a link to some pics of my "twisted tip". Although I seriously think
it will have little impact on the flight characteristics ... provided the
other side becomes the exact inverse of this one, I've decided to re-do it.

Will be a simple matter of popping off the skin, and putting on a new one
... squared up correctly this time.

www.aacnet.com/elite/tip

The new elevator tip width is a bit thinner then Al's 4" ... mine are 3.25"
wide. With the side plate adding to the vertical strength, plus the way the
0.025 top and bottom skin reaches back across the main elevator, it's very
solid laterally as well.

Hi Mike,

Clearance is ok ... actually, I did all the tip work with the elevator
mounted to the stab. Which makes for no accetable excuss as to how I got
that twist in the tip ... except I guess I could blame the barometric
pressure (hehehe). Oh well ... no biggie ... its only metal and time right?

I'm hanging on every word you type w/r/t to your initial flight reports ...
thanks for posting them !!

Cheers,

Building the second tip - there'll be no twist in this one. Amazing what a
clamp and a few pieces of angle stock (on both sides) can do. Now, to get
some more 0.025 to re-do that other tip ... and another task along the way
to weight-off-wheels will be done ... :-)

[rebel-builders] Elite Elevator Mods

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:00 pm

Before you get too far into redoing the other tip...

When I inherited a Moose project the elevator spades had a good twist in
them. I found that by retaining one side at it's original #30 and twisting
the spade straight... that the holes on the other side were only misaligned
by the the amount necessary to drill them up to a 5/32 rivet. Drilled a
couple fresh holes to hold it straight and then brought the old holes up to
5/32 and riveted... cured the twist.
