Fuse #5 Dimensions

Post by Richard E. Swan » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:37 pm

Hello Again Rebel Builders/Flyers:

I've just recently asked for some feedback on the Fuse 5 situation. I've
come to the conclusion that I'll need to replace my forward tube. I was
tempted, especially with Mr. O'Shea's input, to transition to the bungee
gear configuration but the tabs have already been cut off my Fuse 2 pieces -
and that would certainly mean more rivet removing and added time to the
rebuild. Plus, and I hate to admit this to you hard corps backwoods flyers,
my excersions will be downright benign by comparison as I plan on landing
99.9% of the time on hard surface runways.

I'd like to go ahead and order a replacement tube from an aluminum source,
but there is no size/dimension remaining on my tube. Any of you current
flyers/builders out there recall what your Fuse 5 tubes dimensions are?

thanks again for the help,

Richard Swan

Fuse #5 Dimensions

Richard, others,
When I was searching for bungee gear I heard from some very happy Murphy
owners with spring gear. They reported it handled pretty rough landings
fine. Everything has its limits obviously. I opted for bungee for the tear out
concern and the weight as I knew I wanted this long before I bought my
project. The weight difference I recall from the archives and I think MAM is
22-23 lbs.

I found a source for 6061T6, rounded corner square tube:
coastaluminum.com.
They have good prices too, but require purchase of full 20 foot lengths. I
bought square tubing for the main struts 1.125 x .125 and also the 1" square
top pieces of the wishbone. Part of the reason I did this was that the bolt
holes for even the non-wrecked parts, have slightly elongated bolt holes in
some places. I'm also thinking about increasing my main gear length.

I'm stuck on home maintenance for another few weeks and haven't finalized
main gear length. I've seen plenty of comments on people hitting the
tailwheel unintentionally early on attempted 3point landings, thus my interest
in lengthening. Any comments on this idea? Im thinking about 2 inches.

I know this would mean other customized pieces; drag struts, wishbone
pieces, and some of the gussets, but I'm part way into this anyway and don't
mind.

Also BTW, I don't feel too bad using the bungees over Wayne's die-springs.
Was tempted for Waynes, partly also because they will never need
replacement compared to 8-10year life of the bungees. But I also feel the
bungees will provide dampening, compared to practially no damping of die
springs. This (damping) may be theoretical and not a practical advantage --
I dunno.

If anyone wants some of the other AL stock I mention above, let me know as
I have extra I can sell pretty cheap.
