[rebel-builders] Spring Gear vs. Bungee (or Wayne's Die spring)

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:37 pm

As I recall the gist of numerous discussions in the archives, nutshell
version:

The advantage of the spring gear is it has less drag, which some have
claimed yields an increased cruise speed of perhaps as much as 4-5 KTS. Some
also prefer the aesthetics. The disadvantages are increased weight
--depending on source, somewhere between 11 and 18 lbs.-- and the need to
keep an eye on mounting bolt torque and possible distress per SB's.

Spring gear came with my partially completed project and probably would have
been my own preference had I ordered it new.

Okay guys.....I know this is a little off subject....but is the Spring Gear
really that bad? In the year 2020 when I get back to working on Rebel I had
planned on installing the Spring Gear....only because that is what I ordered
when I purchased the kit. I personally think the Rebel with the Spring Gear
and speed cowl make the Rebel a much nicer looking plane.
I think this has been rehashed before but can someone list the pros and
cons of each style of gear?
I have Murphy's 1800 Amphibs and figured they would be on the plane most of
the time but now that I have found out I can not lenghthen my strip long
enough to safetly operate while on Amphibs, I may have to formulate other
plans.
