[rebel-builders] Rebel - Fuse 5 Question

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:36 pm

Hi Richard !

I'm not sure what the problem is, if yours is already correct ...
just leave it.

If you have the bungee gear, I dont think it will matter much,
because somewhere in there, they even allowed the FUS-5's to
be cut in half lengthwise .... not that many do that anymore ...

If you have the spring gear, then there are a whole lot of other
considerations ....

the forward Fuse #5 item.
From the plans it appears that one isn't supposed to drill holes in the
forward Fuse #5, as the holes are to be drilled/enlarged in the rear
tube to allow socket fitting to the bolt head from the rear. A bolt
that is oriented with the nut forward seem counter to recommended
building practices, but I'm assuming Murphy had a good reason for not
wanting enlarged holes in the forward tube. However, I've notice a few
builders online who appear to have done the opposite of the directions
in my copy of the plans and drilled the front tube for bolt head
access. Is there perhaps an update that I'm missing?
Obviously I'd like to not have to drill out the several rivets on top of
the forward tube (fastening the forward cabin floor down), plus not have
to replace the forward tube.

If I do need to drill out the rivets and replace the forward Fuse #5, is
this tube 6061 or 6063?

thanks for any help!

[rebel-builders] Rebel - Fuse 5 Question

Post by Richard E. Swan » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:36 pm

Thanks for the response Mr. Patterson.
I have the spring gear, on a project that hasn't flown yet. In studying the
plans to get an idea of what to order for the new skins, and how to go about
it, I just happened to see that my plans called for drilling out the ends of
the rear tubes to install the three bolts (each side) that fasten both
forward and rear tube with their respective upright in the cage assembly.
When I looked at what I have on hand with the project, I noticed that both
forward tube ends have been drilled out for the three bolt that orient with
the nut to the rear.

[rebel-builders] Rebel - Fuse 5 Question

Post by craig » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:36 pm

Hello Richard,

When you build the cage you have to cut a hole to install and get to those
three bolts on each side. They attach from the back of the front tube to
the front of the back tube. They aren't meant to be installed across both
widths of tubes. That would introduce a crushing potential as you tightened
the bolts. Craig
