[rebel-builders] Float Deck rail tape

Post by Hans Kuck » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:36 pm

To all Elite Builders,
I have just recently finished my Elite 640E and have flown the first 25
hours. Engine temps are within limits but are to high for my liking. I am
interested in building the 4 Piece Piper Style Cowling for the Elite.
Are there any plans, instructions, material list, good advise etc out there.
What else can one do to reduce eng. temps with the regular "speed cowl" form
MAM?

any help would be appreciated

cheers

Hi Hans
What temps are you getting! I spend about 1 year making a new style
cowl for my elite, one was to open up the inlets, then i added cheeks
for more clearance around the cylinders, added cowl flaps (fixed not
adjustable) and then streamlined the shape.Ive got 130 hours on it and
works and looks great.this summer i was getting cylinder temps around
380 degree F with out side air temps around
85-90 degree F along climb at 90 mile/hr indicated it would go as high
as 420 F,on cruise they balance out with in 8 degrees, but on climb #3
is 15-20 degrees hotter, this common with the stock lycoming intake,if
you change to the Superior intake they will balance off.

The tape is black and rubbery - a bit thicker than electrical tape but
clearly intended to seal the joint. What is used on other floats for
this purpose?

[rebel-builders] Float Deck rail tape

Post by Hans Kuck » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:36 pm

HI Dennis, thanks for your mail.I am getting in a moderate climb @ 500'/min
@ 2450 RPM 480 F on the CHT
In cruise I get @ 2400 RPM about 420 F CHT. Oil pressure always around
70-80 lbs and Temp are anywhere from 165 F to 210 F. I am concerned "only"
with CHT . All these values were taken in September of this year on a 0-320
-160 hp ( high compression pistons) freshly overhauled.) (new engine, tight
etc)
I am afraid however that next summer with higher temps I may get into
overheating problems.

I have opened up the back of the cowling and I have installed some louvers
to the lower portion of the cowling. Temps have come down a bit , but I have
to do better.
Would you be able to send me some pics of your cowling?,please.
I am now installing as we speak a 3"-4" LIP on the lower cowling similar to
what I have on my Maule to create some negative pressure.
Thanks again for your interest and if I could have some measurements and
pics, that would be a great help
cheers

WALTER KLATT

[rebel-builders] Float Deck rail tape

Post by WALTER KLATT » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:36 pm

Yes, Hans, with those temps, you have some serious work to do on your cowling to improve your temps. I like to be able to climb in 100F weather, from near seal level to 10,000, without pausing and step climbing to cool it. Cruise should always be below 400 in the hottest weather.

With my old engine the problem was with cyl #3. Some claim that by adding a washer at the back of the cyl between the baffle attachment, it provides some additional cooling. I didn't have that on mine. However, I added that on my new one, and my rear cylinders cool just fine. But since I didn't try it both ways, can't say for sure whether this works. I also have the Superior sump on my new engine, which provides for more even mixture control to all 4 cylinders, so that may also be helping.

The other thing is that my new 360 climbs more than twice as fast with a load than my old 320, so it gets up there faster. Once you are past 6000 feet, it is much easier to keep your CHTs cool.
