[rebel-builders] Moose project front spar attach size

Post by Jason Beall » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:32 pm

Opps. Not I was wrong. 3000 Lbs is my gross weight, not 3500 like a Moose. -Jason

That's Cessna for you... my 1968
C-150 uses 1/2" (AN8) bolts to attach the
wing also... even though it has half the gross. ;-)

I just went through something similar with Murphy three
months ago. I have
a Moose fast build fuselage and SR2500 wings. I am
licensing mine as a
SuperRebel.

I fabricated bushings to go in my 5/8 inch holes in
the fuselage and am
keeping my 1/2 inch attachment holes in the wings.
Using 1/2 inch bolts.
Murphy suggested this and it seems to look fine.

I have a Cessna 185 parts manual I am using to help
design the fuel system
and the 185 uses 1/2 inch bolts.

Welcome Kelly
I must agree with Ted on the 5/8" bolt size for
the wing
front spar
attachment as well as the top and bottom lift
strut bolts.
I agree with Ted the 3/4" bolt could leave it with
a pretty
close edge
distance.
Depending how old your kit is it could have
started out
several sizes
smaller as Murphy upgraded from Rebel to Super
Rebel-2500,
then a few
SR-3000# gross weight, and finally to the
SR-3500.
The upgrade of a
-2500 was accomplished with 13, or 17 (?) mods
weighing in
at about 81
pounds to make the plane a -3500 which was not a
bad trade
off---81 #
increase weight to get a 1,000 # higher gross
weight.
However it left a
number of us builders scratching our heads to
follow it in
the manuals
and mod lists.

I would recommend you send a request to Darryl, it
may take
a few days
for him to respond, but it is a critical area.
Failure is not an
option!

So could you share with us your location and
status of
progress on your
kit?

Dick Wampach SR-3500

I can't imagine why the MAM-built wings have a
3/4" front
attach hole
size,
other than perhaps a mistake at the factory? I'd
start worrying
(perhaps?)
about edge-distance on the fitting at the 3/4"
point.
That size
bolt/fitting in that location has a whole bunch of
stress
on it!

In most any other location I'd say a spacer is
Ok.
However, since I'm
not
an engineer, when you're talking about the spar
attach
point I would
encourage you to either talk to Darryl directly or
to get
some
engineering
advice from someone (????).

Hi Ted thanks for the reply, I wish I knew of the
email
list a year ago,
I
just found out about it 1 month ago from Bob.
Thanks Bob.
Anyway, I am looking at the mam built wings and
the front
attachment
hole is
3/4". The matching hole on the fuselage is 5/8"?

I see in the mods chapter 3 it does say 5/8" (
your correct
Ted) . I
wonder
why the wings have 3/4" holes and if a spacer is
acceptable.

Thanks for your input.

3500 Modifications, Chap 3 says 5/8" Kelly.
That's
the size bolt on two
Moose that I just checked in my hangar too.

Where in the manual did you see the reference to
3/4"? I see an
instance
where the advice used to be to go to a 1/2" hole,
but I
can't find any
reference to 3/4".

New post, first question to rebel builders.

Does anyone know if the forward attachment
brackets for the
wings are to
be
reamed out to 3/4" as stated in the manual?
Because
we are told to use
an "
AN10 bolt ? This is 5/8. Perhaps we are to use
a bushing? If so I've
missed this in the instructions.

Thanks in advance

[rebel-builders] Moose project front spar attach size

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:32 pm

Fred,

I believe the move to 5/8" is only required as part of the Moose 3500 lb
gross weight upgrade.

Fred,

I believe the move to 5/8" is only required as part of the
Moose 3500 lb
gross weight upgrade.

Whew! Even though I was about to jump in and reply as Bob P
has done, you
guys sure had be worried there for a minute. I've been
flying mine for a
year
assuming 3000#, for the SR2500, no moose mods
configuration...

My wing bolts are 1/2". Is there a recommendation to go to
5/8"?
