Battery

Post by Clay Smith » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:19 pm

I'm planning on ordering an Odyssey battery this week. From what I've read
in the archives and the info I get from GNB System in Ontario, the PC680 at
15 1/2 lbs is the right battery for a Rebel. They do have a 925 cranking
amp model (PC925) that weighs in at 26 lbs. I know of a couple Rebels that
have this battery installed. I'm wondering if the extra 10 lbs of weight in
the back of my 0320 Rebel (firewall not cut back, metal prop) wouldn't be a
bad idea. If I do need extra weight in the tail, I'd rather it be usefull
cranking amps weight instead of lead. Any thoughts?
Also, will the Cof G shift much with Murphy amphibs installed, requiring
more or less weight in the back?
Thanks

Clay

Don't know how much the CG will shift on amphibs, but I know Wayne has
stated that putting a gallon jug of water in the aft compartment of each
float helps.

Hi Clay: I put an Odyssey 1250 (great battery) (35 Lbs) in the back of my
Rebel. I also did not cut the firewall back ( a dumb move in my opinion - to
cut it back I mean) and had an O320 H2AD on front as well as a metal
Sensenich prop. the balance came out perfectly in the middle of the empty
Cof G range. If I had to do it again I would also use the 680. - Plenty
strong enough. - Bob J

Clay,
The PC680 is plenty big. An O-360 powered RV here can practically taxi on the starting motor. There are two PC680 batteries available. One is metal case. To explain, it has a steel enclosure sides and bottom. My view is the metal case offers more battery protection and makes it easier to mount securely. Your call.

When charging these absorbed glass mat batteries you need 14.4 volts to get a full charge. Flooded cell batteries charge at 13.8 volts.

Both varieties of PC680 can be bought cheap on eBay under Motorcycles, Parts, BMW in the US$60 range. I think there are also several Harleys that use the PC680 so you might want to check Motorcycles, Parts, Harley Davidson as well.

Regarding cranking power, I am using the 925 and it cranks my 450HP Chevy
350 just fine. The other thing cool about the 925 is that you can buy a
very nice chromed battery box custom fit to the 925. It provided an easy
mount and looks awesome in my plane. I'm not sure you can get cool battery
boxes for the other Odyssey batteries.

I use the PC625 Odyssey battery on mine. It's about a pound or
two lighter than the 680, but has about the same power.

When I installed my 1800 amphibs, my c of g did not change.
