[rebel-builders] Another Elite flying

Congrats to Dennis. He did a beautiful job on that machine and I'm glad
to hear he has it on the water so quickly. I was very impressed with the
quality of work on that Elite.

He came out to the lake with it last weekend, and I got to time his take-off
on the water. He had 2/3 fuel with 2 hefty people and almost no wind. He got
off in 15 seconds, and he said he didn't hit the sweet spot right away. I
was definitely impressed. As everyone knows, the Elite weighs at least 100
pounds more than a Rebel empty, yet this one performed extremely well. His
climb with that same load is just over 1000 fpm. He is using the 76 X 56
Sensenich prop. And it was pretty warm out, too, about 30 C (high 80s F).

I would say his performance is definitely better than my Rebel with the old
320, which I thought was pretty good, too. He has VGs and the new wider span
drooped MAM tips. I think that combination helps him get off the water a
little faster.

Anyway, he is real happy with the plane, and I'm looking forward to having
another local amphib to go flying with around here. It will be interesting
to see how close his performance is to my Rebel now with the new O-360.

[rebel-builders] Another Elite flying

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:51 pm

Yeah, apparently Dennis had a bit of work to do to get the tips finished up,
but they look real good as does the whole plane and paint job. I would say
this one is another show winner candidate. I will get some pics when I get a
chance. He placed the VGs at the 10 % chord position, same as mine. He also
did the elevator mods to narrow the tips and round the tip ends. Elevator
control and sensitivity is now perfect, according to Julius, who says it
feels very similar to his Rebel on floats. Julius is helping him learn to
fly the plane.

Hi Walter
Congratulations to Dennis, glad to hear it's finally up and running. It
looked good a few years ago when I saw it last - love to see some pictures
of how it's turned out.
Been doing the droop wing tips here on the right wing today - between the
showers that is... terrible wet summer we're having this year.

[rebel-builders] Another Elite flying

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:51 pm

I have uploaded a pic of Dennis' plane to the Elite section. If you go to
the files section and just click on new files, you should see it.

We've had some periods of good and bad weather this summer, not too unusual
for us actually. Last weekend was really hot, 34 C (low 90s F) at the lake,
but today is raining with about 20 C, not very nice. Water is warm, though,
was 75 F at my dock on the weekend.
