Dale,
You mention the possibility of better performance, but aren't you already
there with max power rpm under red line at cruise? Do you mean you wish
you
had larger diameter, finer pitch, so as to get better low speed thrust at
the
possible expense of some cruise speed?
-Ben Ransom ...a long way from buying a prop
Ben,
I was thinking of better low speed thrust.

Dale, what climb rates (at a given weight) are you getting?
Sounds like you could increase your performance further with a
pitch that would let you rev a little higher on take-off and
reach 2700 at the top end.

Walter
I agree with you. At gross weight, 70degrees, 1500-2500msl, 70mph, full
power/2350rpm, my rate of climb was timed at 630fpm. Cruise at 2300 was
105.

Dale,

On amphibs you must be using their carbon fiber with
edge protection?
Bruce, Jerry
My engine is a Lycoming 160hp. The prop is wood core,
carbon fiber skin
with leading edge protection, which is not needed with
the 74 diameter.There
is no indication the water is getting to the prop. If
a larger diameter is
used it would be required. I would ask Lonnie Prince
what diameter and
pitch would be best for a given plane.

Lonnie recomended a 74-44 to be a equal to my
Sensenich 74-56. The 44 pitch
is a equal because of the semitar shape, the P-tips,
and because the blades
cone forward under power.

The static rpm is 2300, climb is 2350, full power
2600/115mph. I could have
better performance if I had used a finer pitch or a
larger diameter. Check
with Lonnie Prince.

I purchased the prop through Murphy, and the spacer
from Saber. The
Sensenich spacer will not work with a wood or carbon
prop and is more
expensive.

Not only does the Prince out perform my Sensenich, it
is 25lbs lighter.

It sounds like you could have had a slightly finer pitch to get better
climb
and 2700 RPM redline at full throttle. Your not getting full power at 2600
RPM.
Bruce
I agree with you.

Prince Prop

Post by Clay Smith » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:23 am

I'd like to get some more info and opinions about the Prince prop. I'm
told that there are at least 8 Rebels out there using this prop. Dale,
are you still happy with your prop? Did you get it re-pitched? Who
else has this prop? Maybe I could contact you and others regarding this
prop privately ... so as not to bore the rest of the group too much ..?

Thanks,
Clay

I agree - bore us - we all like to learn better ways - maybe I can get rid
of my 38 lb Sensenich and climb "better" then 2000 ft per min. Bob J Rebel

I love my Prince prop, which is 25 lbs lighter than my sensenich (I sold the
prop), delivered 70 lbs more thrust @ 2300 static / sensenich @2400 rpm,
l00fpm better rate of climb. Both props full power indicated 115mph
@2600. I plan on having Prince repitch the prop to 2500rpm at static for
additional performance.

Clay Smith

Prince Prop

Post by Clay Smith » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:23 am

Hi Dale,
Did you use a spacer with this prop? If so where did you get it? How much?
Lonnie at Prince recommends Saber Manufacturing for prop extensions and
spacers. (Mam is recommending the use of a 1" extension for the nosebowl /
metal cowl) Also, Lonnie indicated that he would re-pitch his prop at no
charge until the customer is satisfied. Is that the case? At 115 mph
cruise my guess is that you are not on floats? What type of spinner did you
go with. Is there any chance of getting a picture of your set up?
Thanks for your help.

I purchased my spacer from Saber, the spinner from aircraft spruce and
specialty.. I am on amphibious floats, the 115mph was at full power. My
cruise is 105 indicated.

Prince Prop

Post by indabush » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:47 pm

Steve, Hank ...

Here are some numbers with the O-320 / Prince 74x47:
Static RPM (tail tied down) 2,500
Rate of climb at 1,800 pounds gross from climb test report 755 fpm
(Pressure altitude 920 ft)
Cruise speed (two people, weight about 1,550; 2,400 RPM) 103 to 105
mph CAS
Max RPM at cruise >2,700
Max rate climb speed Vy is quite a bit higher than the manual says - 80-85
mph CAS versus 69 at 1,650 pounds

The fact that the engine will over-rev in cruise and the cruise speed is
low, definitely suggests too fine a pitch. You don't need 2,500 rpm on
take off either. I am starting to think that I have a lot of cowling /
cooling drag, although temps are very good.
