[rebel-builders] New engine is flying

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:42 pm

Yeah, I have that document, and like I said it is fairly general, and
emphasizes good cooling (which I have) and running at high power during
break-in. But it doesn't say when to start leaning. Anyway, have been told
already by others, that it is OK to start leaning after a few hours.

Sure hope what you say is true though about not having to run at high power
with these nickel carbide cylinders. I would like to start cruising at a
more economical speed soon.

Was up today for a quick flight to the lake after work, and got some more
numbers. Take-off (static) rpm is 2550, which is a little higher than I
wanted. On climb-out it goes to 2600 if I keep my speed down, and to 2650 if
I go faster (90 mph climb). Fuel flow then is at 19.5 gph. Had full tanks
today, and it still climbed at 1500 fpm. Don't know what top speed is, but I
chickened out at 140 mph. Still had more to go, but I thought that was fast
enough. At least my windows at the front are holding fine now, with my new
Velcro latches.

Walter,
I've heard it from a few sources that I regard as pretty solid, but now I
kind of forget where. IIRC, the change came a couple years ago. I just
skimmed ECI's web site and run-in vs break-in PDF
(http://www.eci2fly.com/pdf/BreakInInstructions.pdf), which is probably
what you have. I'll ask further on two of my sources, but yeah, getting it
pretty straight from ECI or their big-time builders seems the only
comfortable way to go.
-Ben
No, I have not heard that. Where would I find that information. The
break-in instructions that they send out and what I saw on their website
are pretty general to cover all their types of cylinders.

I thought ECI advises now that there is no need for the high
power ring
seating with their cylinders. I would find it hard
not to do the more
traditional high power time myself, but what have you heard?

[rebel-builders] New engine is flying

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:42 pm

Just thought I would mention that with my new engine install, I had a
vibration that I felt on my top panel skin, but only at 2500 rpm or higher,
and much stronger at full power. Couldn't figure it out at first, as it was
perfectly smooth at lower rpms, and was starting to think this was a
characteristic of the O-360 with the bigger power pulse (although that
didn't make sense to me). Finally, I solved it, though, so thought I would
share with the group, in case it happens to someone else.

Changed my prop 180 degrees, but that didn't do anything. Then I had a tip
from Wayne to check for cowl clearances. As it happens, my bottom cowls were
pretty close to the Vans airbox that I was using, and also to one of my heat
muffs. So I modified the bottom cowl there hoping that would do it. But to
my disappointment, the vibration remained.

Then I noticed with my cowls off, some black chaffing on the top right side
cowl where the baffles are. I took off another 1/2 inch or so there on my
right baffle, and this time success, no more vibrations.

I guess what was happening is that there is some engine twist on the motor
mounts opposite to the prop direction. And at higher power, the baffles
would then contact the top right cowl.

Anyway, thought I would share, in case anyone else runs into this problem.
