SR. Stab Ribs Denting Skin's Leading Edge

Post by Mike Davis » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

I'm not sure why the message wouldn't send with the photos, it should
have. But when you send them it will create a very large file of garbage
in the archives. Because of this my anonymous FTP site allows uploads. If
you go to ftp.dcsol.com and log in as anonymous, you will be able to
changed to the murphy-rebel directory and upload your photos there. This
will allow everyone to see them, and allow you to place a "link" to them in
your message that will function properly in the archives as well. If you
are not familiar with FTP, I have an FTP program available for download in
the root of my FTP site. This program looks an functions similarly to
Windows Explorer. For you Linux guys (bobp), if you don't know how to FTP,
then your kidding yourselves running Unix! :-) (hint - type "man ftp")

I'm sorry for this inconvenience, but just last week I was contacted by the
sales department of the company that wrote my mail server software. They
want over $1000 to update me to the current release. My feeling is that
not being able to see attachments in the archives is a small limitation
when otherwise it seems to run very well.

I just sent the E-mailed below to Murphy Support.
I figured I would pass it on to the list at the same time.
A few minutes ago I sent this to the list with the attachment photos, but
it
did not seem to get through. (Attachments not allowed on the list?) So I
am
sending it without the photos. I think the situation is still clear.

Any suggestions welcome, thanks,
Don

Hi guys,

Hope all is well.
You will find attached two JPEG pictures. One shows denting at the leading
edge of the stabilizer skin. It is occurring top and bottom on all rib
locations. The very front tip of the leading edge ribs is causing the
denting. See picture of leading edge rib.

The skin was installed using the pilot holes and all went well except for
the denting. My conclusion is that the skin's "radius" at the leading edge
is not quite "full" enough or the nose of the rib is not sized right.

The stab is ready for final riveting of the skin to the spar/rib
structure.
Do you have a fix to relieve the pressure the leading edge ribs are
placing
on the skin? I am confident that I can remove the dents if we can "fix the
ribs". Structurally I don't think there is a problem leaving the dents but
aesthetically it would look like hell. They are very obvious in the right
lighting ... hard to miss.

My thoughts:

1. I am not sure if filing back or cutting the tip of the rib will do the
job.

2. Drill a #30 hole just below the flange radius on the web of the rib
half
way between the two holes on the front flange segment (rib tip). Then make
a
cut from the front of the rib just below the radius to the #30 hole. This
would allow the front part of the rib's flange to flex "inward" relieving
the pressure and allowing the skin to make a smooth transition on the rib.
Negative of this approach ... this would seem to destroy most, if not all,
the strength provided by the very tip and the first rivet on the rib.

Help, thanks,
Don Boardman

No, that's not it... I don't have a limitation set, and your photos should
have gone out... not sure why they didn't. Just thought I'd explain the
pros and CONS of how the system works.

SR. Stab Ribs Denting Skin's Leading Edge

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Mike,

Don't worry about not being able to send photos with the list
mail !!

Personally, I'd MUCH rather have the option of going to
the FTP site & viewing them IF and WHEN <I> want to - I receive about
130+ emails a day, and REALLY do NOT want a bunch of UNSOLICITED
HI-RES JPEGS clogging my mail box. I get enough of those from those
inconsiderate direct marketing clods who steal or fake addresses to
send mountains of junk !!!

<set RANT off> :-) :-)

Seriously, for those who DO want to submit photos, (thank you -
they ARE really helpful for all !) PLEASE set the resolution to 100 dpi
or so - anything more than this is wasted, and just takes up space &
slows transfer !!

Thanks again for the great work, Mike !! We are all VERY
grateful to you for providing and supporting this forum !!
