One of the magazines recently did an article on building your own as
well.

Ken do you remember what magazine? I subscribe to EAA and Custom Planes
so it wasn't in those.
A small shop vac would work fine if you can cobble together the mask
and hose.

My original thought was to offer the fire department a couple of bucks
for there surplus \ junked SCBA masks but there don't seem to be any
available. Then I started thinking about buying a gas mask at the local
army surplus store (~$15 to 20 US). I figured I could remove the filter
cartridge and cut it apart, saving the thread body. I can attach a hose
to the thread body with a clamp and then screw the assembly back into the
mask. I could put a HEPA filter in the air line at the mask end as a
precaution.

If the mask isn't tightened to tight to the face in the chin area, the
excess air will vent out the sides. Not as nice as Wayne's system but I
think it should work.

For the air source, I was thinking about a 1 or 5 gallon shop vacuum.
Figured I can run the vacuum hose out into a fresh air area and hook the
hose from the mask to the exhaust port.

Haven't done any of this yet but these are some of the my thoughts.
