Wayne,
Installing the fus-89 modification the instructions said to slide the piece
back along the inside of the side skin and thru the notches in the one piece
bulkhead fus-36. Only the top notched are blocked by the bulkhead doubler
fus-43. There is no real way to get inside and cut out notches in the
doubler, to allow the flange of fus-89 to pass back past the bulkhead. I
believe the top flange on fus-89 is there for strength so I don't want to cut
it off. Have you experienced this? What is the solution?

Bruce,
I would think you could get in there (crawl down inside the tail cone) and
reopen the "notches" with a unibit stepping drill and some mini snips, or a
"zip bit" in a dremel tool (used for cutting drywall around electrical boxes
and floor tiles). They are fluted like an auger and work well for cutting
sideways in aluminum (just hang on tight). I've built a new Rebel with the
extensions going into the original installation but have never bothered to
do this as a mod to a flying aircraft, as I've never seen a need for it on
ones that have a "proper" tailwheel assembly.
I'm sure there are others working in this area, that could help you out on
this! I believe you are modifying a "finished" tail cone here though,
right??

Yes, it is a finished tail cone. I'm also using a Scott 3200 tail wheel, so
maybe this is not even necessary. MAM suggested another fix in the very aft
section around the tailspring bulkhead fus-49, with a reinforcing triangular
flanged piece (inside the fuselage side skin fus-23-2 on the tail section).
Is this fix necessary if one is using a pivoting tail wheel? Thanks for the
help.

Bruce, either I am misinterpreting this discription or am having a real
brain gap! The fus 89 extensions we discussed in the last email ARE the
"triangular flanged" pieces that extend each side skin (FUS 22-1's) to tie
them into FUS 30. Fus 23 is the bottom skin for the tail cone and stops a
bulkhead forward of the rearward most bulkhead, so no way this can be tied
into the FUS 49 tail spring attach bulkhead. Are you sure they (MAM) weren't
suggesting to do the "Ontario" builders doubler wrap mod, on FUS 30, between
the tail post and the tail spring attach bulkhead!

Sorry I didn't mean to confuse you. I'm sure it's me and your brain is doing
fine! The second fix I was talking about was just a repeat of what MAM told
me over the phone. I bought the new manual on CD and when I get it I'll know
more about it, but it has something to do with the most aft bulkhead and the
main bolt on the tail spring. It may be a doubler of the fus 30 but there was
also something about a two piece reinforcing fix inside the fuselage where
the main bolt of the spring bolts to the underside of fus 30.
MAM says that with the evolution of the earlier Rebel models with 912's, to
the bigger, faster and heavier 0 320's, these beef ups are necessary even
with pivoting tail wheels. I have learned to value your opinion so I wanted
to know what you thought.

believe. Same as a motor mount "bath tub" fitting. I would imagine yours at
serial #357R already has this mod. Just look in the tail section and see if
you have the machined 2 piece fitting for the AN6 tail spring bolt, or
simply a hole through the bulkhead and it's "laminated" wraps. IMH opinion
either is as good as the other, with the latter only being much harder to,
originally, install! Would be pointless (and destructive) to change from one
to the other after the fact, IMHO.
