[rebel-builders] Avmap EKP IV

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Hi Garry !

That is definitely a legend !! We just came through the Rocks
with an AvMap EKP IV - they are THE greatest GPS !!!!!

We've flown with ours with 3 year-out-of-date data - not a
good idea for serious trips, but it certainly works fine. It does
warn about the date, but that's just at startup .... Same for
the terrible "moving map" GPS built into our King Nav-Com -
it's almost always 3 years out-of-date .... maybe this year
I'll have to cough up for the update, to Ramble ...
just in case I have to fall back to that GPS.

Never heard of ANY GPS that would stop working just
because the data was out of date --- could have been some
other cause.... Like being out of clear sight of satellites
from being waaaay down in a valley ... ;-)

My KLX135 still has 1995 data in it. They don't move airports...often..

I even bought the card to use the laptop to update it...but haven't been
bothered to do so just yet.

[rebel-builders] Avmap EKP IV

Hmmm - the "10 year life" internal memory battery in my little Lowrance
unit is 10 years old now so maybe I'm shortly going to find out what
happens when it dies. I'd guess a 10 minute cold start everytime it's
turned on which would sure seem like a failed unit.

My KLX internal battery died a year or two back. Darn near right on the 10
years and you lose your user way points.

Field Aviation in Mississauga wanted $350 + to change it. Battery was $5.25
from Digi-key and an hour of my time.

[rebel-builders] Avmap EKP IV

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Well yes now's the time if ever. I actually have a 2000c on order but
it's a bit of a story and I'm not holding my breath. Not as nice as the
Avmap but half the price even with accessories, terrain, and Canada map
create. Isn't the next generation gps system being planned?? How long
before the present models become obsolete?

[rebel-builders] Avmap EKP IV

Post by Garry Wright » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Thanks to all who replied to the Avmap question. Urban legend it is
then, to my relief. It is hard to believe that any reputable company
would allow a database to expire during use. Imagine the liability issues.

Cheers
Garry

BTW For anyone who sees a need for it, I have a GPS (Apollo) from the
early '90's which was plug in compatible with with the loran of the same
manufacturer. It is now surplus to my requirements of course since I
bought the EKP IV. Its complete with shelf etc and dbase card and
antenna. Interestingly, as the magnetic deviation out west went somewhat
extreme, the unit decided that its database could no longer be relied
upon in certain areas. Most places it still works but in some areas -
and I can't really discern a pattern, it whines about a database update.
Anyway its for sale - cheap. The database is about 1995 vintage so it is
well and truly expired. Functionality is there if you buy a database
update.
