Garry there might be a way to have your cake & eat it too, check out the ANR
add-on kits from Headsets Inc. (besides, after a divorce there wouldn't be as
much loose change floating around as before would there ;o0)

We have updated a set of Clarks (hers) as well as making me a set of clones from
scratch. I've never been spoiled by trying a set of "good" store bought ANRs
but the difference between ANR on and off is phenomenal. Hey if they weren't so
bulky I'd use them for working in the shop (following Wayne's GOOD advice).
Pretty impressive in the shop too because you can stand beside the big upright
air compressor and turn them on and it's almost like it's not there!

Anyhow, if you can build an airplane (and that's why we're here right!) you can
mod a set of headsets with these kits.

Anyone else out there try them?

Hi Dave,

The problem with this is the up front price which for practical purposes
is as much as a new ANR set. $399 + S&H and then you have to build it. I
come from an electronics background (though much dated now) and that
sort of pricing is certainly on the edge of what you could sell at all
in a Heathkit style offering. And then I think you could only do it if
it really was better than production units - not unthinkable at all when
you put it in perspective of homebuilt airplanes. I was thinking about a
$200 package some time back and may try it.

ANR Headsets, Was: Re: [rebel-builders] Door Windows

I work for Bose Corporation who pioneered the ANR headsets back in the 80's.
The Bose Aviation X's are expensive, but they are phenomenal. So here is the
commercial. I've worked the booth at a couple of air shows, and it's fun to
watch pilots eyeballs come out of their heads when they we simulate 110 db
cabin noise, they try them on and activate the ANR. Bose sets are amazing
comfortable with the even clamping force of the torsion spring and the
performance ANR is terrific. Yeah, I'm biased, but I would say, buy
whatever ANR headsets you can afford - Lightspeed, David Clarks, or Bose.
But SAVE YOUR EARS! Sooner or later, you'll own Bose. :)

ANR Headsets, Was: Re: [rebel-builders] Door Windows

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Even the cheapest ANR that I've tried is 90% as good as the best that
I've tried and great in a noisy airplane. However as someone mentioned,
I also always prefer the units with lots of passive protection for sound
performance. Probably because the ANR only works on the very low
frequencies. Sound booths seem to be set up to show off the frequencies
that ANR shines at. So I consider comfort and durability to be the most
important factors. I like the comfort of the lightspeed. Their ear
seals seem to have a short life but the company is very good about
replacements. I also like gel earseals though. For cold climates I don't
like plastic headbands as they tend to break. I always give the ANR to
my passenger as I never turn it on anymore unless I'm in someones Lyc.
powered machine. Batteries are a bit of a pain and auto turn off is
almost essential IMO. There may be a non ANR DC 10-13.4 in my future
but not much chance of a Bo$e unless there is a 60% off sale.

Someone asked about the retrofitted ANR kits. A buddy is quite happy
with one but he put it in a comfortable headset and he only paid about
$150 for the retrofit kit a couple of years ago.

I also recall old military findings where even with the finest
protection money could buy, hearing loss due to bone conduction was
documented. It seems that in extreme noise, a helmet is better than a
headset can ever be.

Post by Keith Leitch » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Brian,

Not to rain on your fire but I have tested nearly every headset out there and "I" feel the Lightspeed is the best value for dollar out there. I could not really hear any disernable difference in them and the Bose. The problem I and several others that I know, have with the Bose is that there is little passive NR. For Champs, Super Cubs, etc, it is nice to have some passive also. A few guys that I know have ended up throwing there Bose in the back seat and using something else, especially when on floats.
Before anyone gets bent out of shape...I own several Bose products and have never really been pleased with there longevity. My Lifestyle home entertainment system has had to be repaired a couple of times. If it hadn't of cost $2,000 I would throw it in the trash.
Okay, I'll quit whining now.

Have any of you guys looked at the recently introduced earplug style
headsets (article in most recent Flying Magazine)? Lightspeed have one, and
there are a couple of others. No fancy electronics, but if you can tolerate
having something like an earplug in your ear, they apparently do the job.

ANR Headsets, Was: Re: [rebel-builders] Door Windows

Post by Dave Ricker » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Hi Garry

The upgrade kit I spoke of is $US169
(http://www.anr-headsets.com/Html_folder ... rder.shtml) plus your present
headset and of course your labour to assemble so if you have to go buy a passive
headset too then it would make you think twice. Their already built ANR headsets are
$US375 http://www.anr-headsets.com/Html_folder/AH-7AR.html. Were they in the headset
survey Kitplanes did a while back?? I wonder how they rated.

I thought the $169 was a bit dear (especially by the time it made it here across the
border......) but they do have a tooled injection molded plastic part (tooling $20k
max) a custom PC board (not that pricy to tool up for) and a couple of custom foam
parts needing (low cost) tooling and of course there's the investment to design &
market it so perhaps $169 isn't all that bad after all!

Francine already had her Clarks so it was a no-brainer and I had cobbled up someting
from a set of passive hearing protectors ($CDN20 Clark knock-offs from Aviall) and
some various other scrounged bits, pieces & samples so again it was a no-brainer to go
ANR. Even looks like the real thing!

Just depends on what you have to start with & how happy you are with the final
product. For our (limited) use they're fine (until I try a set of "good" storebought
units LOL!)

Anyhow, a good step up from passive units.

Hi All,
I bought the Clarity Aloft for my wife and she loves them. No clamp, no
weight. When she has grudgingly let me use them I find them very comfortable and
the db reduction is so close to my after market anr I can barely tell the
difference. The only complaint is the ear seal/plugs are like temper foam and
they need to be warm before you put them in your ears, more so in the winter
obviously, no summer problems.

bulky I'd use them for working in the shop (following Wayne's GOOD advice).
Pretty impressive in the shop too because you can stand beside the big upright
air compressor and turn them on and it's almost like it's not there!

Anyhow, if you can build an airplane (and that's why we're here right!) you can
mod a set of headsets with these kits.

Anyone else out there try them?
