[rebel-builders] Door Windows

Post by steve whitenect » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

I used an exhaust system from aircraft technologies which have cross over
pipes into two mufflers and also two heat muffs. Around $1100 us and very
quiet. With the ANR head sets, it's very, very quiet.

Thanks Richard, Drew and Eddie. I will look at what GE offers and go
from there. Noise is definitely a concern.

There is an article in Kitplanes this month on a foam material
'polyvinyl nitride' which does a good job and complies with FAA
requirements on fire resistance. Does anyone know of a source in
Canada?
My originals are only 1/16" thick and barely manage to hold snapvents
sort of.

They may be double but 'purring' is not the descriptive I would apply.
It is not really all that bad but certainly a lot noisier than
production stuff. My ears are getting older too so I'm sure that is not
helping a lot.

FWIW I just went down to Home Depot/ Rona/ local lumber store and bought
acrylic about 0.080" thick. They all had numerous sizes precut. I did
not want Lexan even though I had it and it was available in all the same
stores. Acrylic is much easier to crack but much more resistant to
crazing from chemicals and fuel IMO. It is also much less likely to
yellow. Most preformed windshields are acrylic and acrylic is cheaper
too. I drilled the holes oversize in the plastic and then used pop
rivets with aluminum mandrels which don't pull near as hard as avex or
expand radially.

Builders,

In so far as my windows for sale.

I really do not know what they are worth but I can say that I think the installation is fairly easy and the end result was fantastic on the rear four windows on each side.

The windows that I have for sale are the front ones (the ones that are next to you while you are flying). They are grey and bubbled.

I admire those that are building these things and I will sell the parts that I have at a fair price.

If someone is coming to AirVenture and can do some work on my Moose.........maybe we can work a trade.

Thanks Ken. I guess your kit might be fairly old with the 1/16" windows.
I will look carefully to see if it is significantly more work to do the
install with thicker before jumping into that. The side windows are
materially degraded compared to the windscreen but there is a big
difference in age as well. The windscreen is as new. Wayne installed it
around 2001. The side windows are 1992, but outside only a small part of
that time. I will check out the acrylic.

If u don't have an ANR head set, get divorced and buy a good set. I was/am a
commercial pilot and if it wasn't for a good David Clark ANR set, my hearing
would be alot worse than what it is. It's worth the money and if u have a
couple more bucks, get the Bose.

[rebel-builders] Door Windows

Post by NormIsler » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

I recently researched the subject of ANR vs standard headsets, and there is
no doubt that the ANR versions are well worth the extra. Just an additional
tidbit as food for thought.

Bose and David Clark both have relatively new models, The Bose "X" at $995US
and the Clark "X-11" at about $799US. Both of these are outstanding units
with low weight and minimal "clamping force." (Otherwise knows as what makes
your head feel as though it were in a vise after being worn for a while.) Both
these units use a lot of electronic wizardry (and owner dollars) to provide
the active noise reduction.

I found that David Clark also had the H10-13X model at just about $550US.
Lightspeed has the 30-3G model for a similar price. Although slightly "older"
models, they utilize the passive technology a bit more (sealing noise out vs
canceling it electronically.) As a result, if they stop "actively" canceling
noise, maybe because I forgot to bring out a new 9 volt battery to the airport
today, they still do a better job of sealing out the noise then the newer,
more expensive models.

So far I have logged several flights, the longest about 3 straight hours
with my new David Clark 10-13XL.

I couldn't be happier.

Just my $.02
