Help with Moose prop

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Hi guys !

Brent needs some help with the Corvette Moose,
getting the prop to work properly.

It's a 78" McCauley constant speed - and McCauley
just hang up as soon as they hear it's attached to a homebuilt !!
(Good reason to buy Hartzell or MT !!!!)

He'd like to talk to someone with a flat engine, with a
2 blade CS prop, to try to get some numbers. I've already
passed him Al Paxhia's address - anyone else ???

On takeoff, it will surge up to 5,000 rpm if the throttle
is opened quickly, but it will than drop to about 4,500 rpm,
and will not go higher - this is workable, but not ideal.
On cruise, we want to get about 3,600 rpm and 24 inches of MP,
but at 3,600, the most we can get is about 18-19" -- have to
go to 4,200 to get 25", but then oil temp rises rapidly to
unpleasant levels (260 !).

The governor has been back to the shop, where they
replaced the 'speeder spring' (???) - hasn't made much difference,
except when the oil is cold ... Prop hub now seems to be
weeping a thin film of oil .... This is a BRAND NEW PROP !!!!

Getting very frustrated - would love to try another prop &
governor..... or get some suggestions ! Anybody got an idea
what might be wrong ????
