[rebel-builders] Moose tailcone stringers

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Jack,

Several folks have come up with varying designs to reinforce the tailcone
section. All of the stringer material, with one exception, is simply either
witches "hat" or "L"-shaped aluminum. The exception is the use of wing or
rudder stringer along the very bottom of FUS-422. I have pictures I can
post (again) or email you directly; Scott Aldrich has also posted tailcone
reinforcing.

The postings you refer to back from 4/25/06 are from Bob Scheuber (I think).
He added two lines of channel that he bent in a pan-brake down the length of
his fuselage. I cc'd Bob on this email so you'll have his email if you want
to contact him directly.

Ted

Need some help,
Back on 4/25/2006 someone posted some photos in the file (107 S/M Fuselage)
concerning the use of reinforcing stringers in the tailcone. Does anyone
have info on these stringers? What supplier do they come from? What are the
cross-section dimensions and configuration ( angle or U-channel).
Thanks to anyone who can reply.

Jack
Those photos were from my fuselage.I used 3/4 angle extrusion.I put eight
lengths all the way around what is needed is to file out the bulk heads to
slide the stingers in place and pick up the rivett line of the corner wraps
and rivett them together.

[rebel-builders] Moose tailcone stringers

Post by Rick Muller » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

An alternate approach that I took is below. I did so for 2 reasons. 1)
strength of the tail section (oil canning, etc.) and 2) to protect the skin
I must admit I didn't fully realize how big the cabin was when I did this.
My plan was to put fishing poles, etc. in the tail cone; light stuff. I
didn't realize they would fit in the forward section easily. What I did:

1) Add a layer of .020 skin on the interior of the ribs from the rear of the
cargo door all the way to the tail.
2) Add a floor of .020 skin from the cargo door rear for 3 ribs, up to where
the elevator pulley's are located.
3) Add witches hat I had left over (I think the accidentally shipped me an
extra section) mounted diagonally on top of the interior skin. This
significantly reduces the opportunity for fuselage bending when the tail
hits. Others have observed lots of oil canning when the tail hits the
ground.
4) Add an access panel under the fiberglass fin fairing on the top of the
fuselage. The access panel is about 4-5" wide. The sides of the access
panel are re-enforced with 1/8" angle between the ribs. This will prevent
the oil canning that has been observed in this area.
5) Between the ribs mentioned in item 4 above I installed witches hat on the
inside along the bottom of the fuselage. This witches hat and the 1/8"
re-enforcement are tied into the ribs.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to all who have replied on this subject (Bob Scheube,Rick Muller,
Bill Pollack, Ted Waltman, et al). I now have a lot of options to consider. Great
to have this kind of forum.
