[rebel-builders] carry-thru gussets

If you are going bungee gear..YES... this is where the wishbone tubes get
bolted in, so the 4 rivets surrounding the bolt hole must be flush. If going
Cessna style leaf gear...you can just rivet with normal domed rivets.

Subject: [rebel-builders] carry-thru gussets

Hi all,
I'm countersinking the four #11 holes in each of the fuselage bottom
carry-through gussets. Do I need to countersink deep enf to get a smooth
face along the gusset across the csk rivets? I think (looking ahead) it
looks like these areas are clearance for the bungee gear inside tubes, and
if so, I need to countersink enf to leave the csk rivet faces flush to the
gusset. If someone can please confirm this?

Thanks,
-Ben/ 496R

Thanks for the confirmation Wayne. I'm just not easily inclined to drill
away more CSK space than needed.

BTW, I need to buy bungee gear if anyone has unneeded set, or work a trade
with new owners wanting Cessna style. (My project's original owner had
bought it with Cessna style.) I'll repost the ad' I've had in the
classifieds here.

While at this stage now's the time to consider anchor nuts for the bolts
securing the wish-bones to allow for removal of the wish-bones for float
installation.

Thanks Angus. Any recommended method for attaching anchor nuts? (I'm
picturing tieing them to a little plate of .032 that is picked up by the 4
countersunk rivets -- on the back side of course)

Also, how big a difference in float/gear change is having the wishbone
anchor nuts?

Without the anchor nuts you have to cut a big enough hole in the inner cabin
floor to get a ratchet in to remove the 5/16 nut. Howard always wanted his
wishbone out when on floats....and I did it that way. On my own... I don't
bother...figure it adds a bit of truss strength to the carrythru tubes and I
doubt it slows me down any.

[rebel-builders] carry-thru gussets

Post by Schmucker, Del » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:04 pm

I have been taking my wishbone out when I put it on floats each spring.
It is quite a challenge to get the bolts and nuts on in the fall. I
have worked out a systems that seems to work but it involves long skinny
things, magnets, skinned knuckles, assorted verbiage, sockets, etc. I
wish I would have had the foresight to put in nut plates. The pilots
side is particularly challenging because of the seat rail locations.

Just to make sure... The nut plates go on the rear carry through, not the
front? i.e. bolts go in from the front, toward back?
Thanks,
-Ben

ps: Found a nice local source for semi-odd things such as 5/16" nutplates,
cheap too. :)

That's the only smart way. Putting them on the front tube would defeat the
purpose of not having to cut access holes in the floor.

Wide open on the front side unless you install a double floor like a few
have to add weight trying to strengthen the fus-7 pan.

Sounds like my Fuselage CD will be a tad late for you Ben. Hopefully it can
help others get that hull finished with very little, if any, reference to
the manual.

I dunno Wayne, one should never underestimate how slow I am. ;)
I know there are more floor channels in the 'baggage area' and those took
me forever and a day for the aft fuselage. Gah! I think I recall reading
since I did that part that you suggest not bothering with the angle
brackets? That seems quite reasonable to me, in retrospect, at least for
some of them. Would this apply to the baggage area too?

I'd do them definitely in the baggage area and under the seats to tie that
structure all together. The tailcone....I'm down there once a year to
retrieve my ELT for certification and again to put it back in the tray. I
don't think it really needs the angles back there since the fus is strong
enough for flight loads without it.
