[rebel-builders] Speed Cowl

Post by Gary Gustafson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:56 am

I have split my speed cowl from the inlet to the firewall
portion of the cowl and took out the concave bow (put a
straight edge from inlet to bulkhead and both sides bow
inward so that there is a 1 1/4" gap in the center) in each
side. I used cleco's and a rigid piece of aluminum channel
to pull out each side and then had to put in stiffeners on
the inside to keep it from bowing back. It makes the lines
of the plane appear a lot better. I note that there is a
picture of a 'Murphy Rebel 160' as part of a Murphy Rebel
O-320 test and evaluation report where this bow-in is very
noticeable. Pictures of several Rebels show that some
planes have this bow-in and some do not.

My question is that Have the newer speed cowls been modified
to remove this bow-in or did others remake their speed cowls
as I did? I have an old Rebel (@242) kit.
