If anyone has one or two 4' pieces (or a reasonable facimile thereof) that
they would be willing to part with I am interested. Especially if they
could be brought to Sun& Fun. I believe BobP may be coming and could get
them to me if he is willing. Let me know what you need for them and if US$
is OK.

[rebel-builders] 5/8" square tube

Post by Mike Kimball » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:52 am

That stuff is commonly available at hardware stores, at least in my area
(Fairbanks, AK) it is. The only differences between what MAM provides and
the hardware store stuff is that the MAM stuff is radiused at all four edges
and I'm pretty sure the hardware stuff is a different alloy. I used the
hardware stuff to build my second cargo door for my extended cargo area.

[rebel-builders] 5/8" square tube

Post by Robert Andrews » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:52 am

Can't resist jumping in here. The doors on 612e were built per plans -
hinged at the forward edge. Along with several other mods or changes to
612e, I plan to convert the doors to seaplane doors - hinging at the top.
To acomplish this, I plan to make a new "full door" size frame, and hinge a
window frame (also at the top edge) inside that door frame using material
from the existing doors. Searching for similar door frame material locally
was a bust ... only found the square stock. I guess I could use it ... but
I do like the "rounded edge" square tubing, and I don't really care what its
made out of as its non-structural. Anyone know a source to buy the "round
edged" tubing? ACS doesn't sell it ... Then there's the issue of how to
make the bends ... square tubing doesn't bend like round tubing does ... how
are curved bends made with this "square" tubing anyway ????

Cheers, Bob 612e

[rebel-builders] 5/8" square tube

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:52 am

Hi Bob !

There was an Autocad drawing of a design for gullwing doors in
the archives. If it's gone, maybe the original poster could re-post it....

Unfortunately, I think the 5/8" rounded tubing is a custom extrusion,
made for Murphy ....

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:52 am

If anybody has some extra 5/8" square tube, I'll be happy to
deliver it to Ralph ....

Unfortunately, the odds are slim - as I think it's a custom
extrusion that Murphy has made to order for them ...

You might have to go with round tube .... maybe 3/4" -
you could then flatten it a bit .... I know - reaching ! ;-)
Or use 2 pieces of angle ... ????

Or use all straight pieces that butt at the corners. A gusset at the butt
joints hides the butt and strengthens the assembly. That's what I did with
my extra cargo door. Doesn't look as good as the nicely bent tubing from
MAM for the other doors, but I think it turned out pretty nice anyway.

I'm pretty sure we have some in the rack at work. I'll check and report
back. It will bend like round tubing if you use a die that's strong enough
to keep the sides from springing out

To those interested in square tubing or other 6061 angle or sheet
stock---
I have checked with a local supplier of metals, ABC Supply Inc. in
Sacramento CA. (916)-452-7000, or (800)-222-7875.
They carry .063" x 1/2" in 12' lengths at bout $48.00 US.
Also .063" wall x 3/4" x 24' about $50.00, and .125" wall x 3/4" x 24'
about $71.00.
They will cut at no charge, and can ship in lengths of about 107" at no
premium, (UPS I assume). I do not think you have to buy full length
pieces.

They also say that 5/8" would normally be a special run from a supplier,
and they buy from all around the country, and have no source on 5/8".
SO if you want it you may have to go to Murphy. That may be a simple
source and have the bends you need in the stock.

How about using steel tubing. I know either Spruce or Wicks sells it.
The wieght difference isn't that much different. Just need to do a good
job priming them.
