Gear step

Merry Xmas,
Still looking at my Elite trying to come up with a step to get in it. Been looking at a C140, they bolt a step to the gear leg. What's the consensus here for drilling a couple 1/4" through bolt holes through the center of each gear leg so I can bolt a wrap-around piece of aluminum to them with a bolt and nut?
