IO-540

Post by Peter & Monica » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:56 pm

-- FYI --

Just received our July 2000 issue of Sport Aviation - page 144 lists
Lycoming IO-540 G1D5 290HP engines for sale - zero hours since first
overhaul - all accessories and log - no prop governor, with matching
Hartzell constant speed propeller - engine and propeller $19,750 USD,
crated FOB Tucson, AZ no core exchange required - 719-481-2286 fax
719-481-2203

Although this engine is roughly 75 pounds heavier than a parallel valve
engine that MAM uses on its prototypes, it has the added features of
more efficient fuel leaning capabilities, larger diameter crankshaft and
rod bearing diameters, and stronger connecting rods, forged pistons and
piston cooling jets.

If this engine is as advertised, (go over the particulars of the
overhaul with the shop), it's a good buy.

Rob Helt

IO-540

Post by Rob Helt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:56 pm

Hi Wayne;
Looked at these engines before and talked to Bob Patterson about them.
The engines are stored in Europe then brought over in a container of about
20 at a time.
I called and spoke to these people after sun-n-fun and they only had one
engine left. Price then was the same as presently advertised. Might be a
good buy but there was no guarentee, ie they wouldn't guarentee the core
or the crank. Bob apparently new someone who went down to inspect the
engines and in their words they had a "varsol overhaul". Then on the other
side of the coin a Murphy representative at sun-n-fun new someone who bought
one of these engines and was very happy with it. Ergo only advice that I can
give is if you want one of these engines bad enough go and inspect it for
yourself so that you know what you are getting into.
