[rebel-builders] Amphib Brakes

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:16 am

Pretty sure it's just an o-ring on the Cleveland assembly. I went out and
crawled under mine to get you the number off the caliper since my tags are
still readable and I doubt yours are. The Part # is 30-9C

One of my 1800 amphib wheels is leaking fluid. I first thought it was the
line or connection, but have found that it seems to be coming from the
brake
mechanism itself. I haven't taken anything apart yet, but assume there
must
be some O-ring inside again that is causing the leak. It is very annoying
as
number one it is causing a little puddle all the time in my hangar, and I
need to add fluid eventually, but also it affects my braking when taxiing
if
I have to make a hard turn to one side, because the disc pads get oily.
Has
anyone else experienced this?

Also for Bruce G. and others interesting in fishing locally here, I flew
with my son to Fire Lake again yesterday, and I think I have finally
nailed
the best location and technique to catch as many trout as we want. We
caught
all we wanted in about 2 hours and were throwing back in the smaller ones.
And we didn't need the inflatable canoe either, as we just stood on big
logs
off the shore line. And it allowed us to figure out exactly which
lures/flies worked and which didn't, as with the clear water, we could see
all the action. Best fishing I've had for a long time.

Thanks Wayne, that was my thinking, too. Will wait for a suitable down time
opportunity and take it apart.

[rebel-builders] Amphib Brakes

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:16 am

Hi Walter I'm just dealing with this myself on my wheel gear. The pads had
worn to a piont where the piston came out past the o-ring and made a large
puddle. I measured the pad thickness is still 1/8" and the matco teckie
told me the minimum is .10" so It should be good but I need to replace
anyways. For others with the narrow silver matco wheels I found out theres
a 1" spacer available that I have ordered as well.

Thanks, Drew. Since I am well over 400 hours now on my amphibs, it may also
be possible that my pads are worn. I haven't had them apart yet to check.
Anyone know what the minimums are for the Clevelands?

[rebel-builders] Amphib Brakes

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:16 am

New are 3/16" thick and 1/2 thickness would be minimum of 3/32. Cleveland
pads don't have it but Rapco replacements actually have a wear indicator
notch that disappears when you hit mins.

66-106 is the pad you need x 4 to do both wheels and 12 pad rivets.

[rebel-builders] Amphib Brakes

Post by bgeorgen » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:16 am

I experienced a weak brake for the longest period and had the brake assembly
apart several times. It wasn't until I took the wheel off for inspection at
annual did I noticed the axle was rotating in the C clamp. Every time I
braked in that direction the axle would rotate and simulate a weak brake. I
can sympathize with your brake assemble frustrations.

Glad you're having a good time fishing at Fire Lake,Walter. I do wish I was
there. I have been taking advantage of the good weather and flying up to
Priest Lake and exploring the back country by air. We had a bear in our
front yard at Priest L. last month, blocking our departure to a beautiful
hiking trip. After a little exitement the bear soon left and our hike
continued. You and Ruth or Jason do not need an invitation. :-)

[rebel-builders] Amphib Brakes

Yes, I remember you telling me that your axle was spinning in the clamp. I
haven't seen that yet on mine, but interesting to know it happens, and
another thing to watch for on the amphibs.

I showed Ruth the pics of your "cabin", and she was impressed to say the
least. Maybe next year we can try and make it. And of course looking
forward to seeing you up here again, and bring your wife, too, if you can.

Yeah, this summer here just won't quit. Temps will be in the 20's (70s F)
again today and this week. Heading out to the lake again shortly
(Thanksgiving holiday here in Canada).

mechanism itself.

[rebel-builders] Amphib Brakes

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:16 am

I fixed my leaking brake on my amphibs. I replaced the O-ring on the puck
(15 cents), and no more leaks. The old one didn't look all that bad, though,
but I guess it must have been worn slightly or shrunk a bit. The puck and
bore were completely smooth with no signs of scoring. Anyway, all is good
now. I also checked the wear on my pads, and they are still well above the
minimums, so will leave them alone.

Bruce, in this post, you said your axle would rotate on the clamps with
braking. When I took mine apart, I could not see how that is possible. The
brakes are secured to the axle arm with bolts, which should prevent any
movement. Unless, I am totally missing something here...

Post by Bruce Georgen » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:20 am

I know the axle was rotating slightly. I'm not sure I can't picture it, I'll have to check the brake assemble again and see what your talking about. Do you have Cleveland brakes? On your Rebel, If you loosen the "C" clamp that holds the axle in place does it not rotate?

[rebel-builders] Amphib Brakes

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:20 am

Yes, I have the standard Cleveland brakes for the amphibs. The only way I
can see the axle rotating on the clamps is if the bearings are somehow
seizing. The brake mechanism is attached to the axle arm and can not move.
The calipers clamp the rotor which is attached to the wheel. I can't see how
the brakes can cause the axle to spin on the clamps. Again, I could be
totally missing something here, which is always possible...
