I wanted to ask if anyone with a flying Rebel was planning to be at the
Arlington Fly In? And if so when you might arrive? I'd really like a chance

Arlington Fly In
The Rebel Ramble won't get to the Arlington area until about a week
AFTER the show .... but there will be a few Rebels (and Renegades) flying
along to "Cicely, Alaska" - alias Roslyn, WA ! We're not sure WHERE we
are going to stop once we leave Chilliwack, other than <somewhere> for
US Customs, and somewhere near Roslyn, then on to Sandpoint, ID, and
Libby, MT ......
You could catch up to us at the Murphy factory before that, as
we'll likely spend a day or 2 in Chilliwack.

I'll pipe in with some info...
Lynden is more of a residential airpark and
customs is not available. Blaine is possible,
but it is not really in the right direction. It
is right on the border. You can almost hit the
border toll booths with a rock from the tie-down (not
a good idea). There is no tower, but you may need
Mode C transponder and radio because you potentially
operate in Class C and D airspace due to proximity
of Vancouver Int'l and Abbotsford.
Bellingham is the natural customs stop for folks
coming to the Northwest, especially folks coming
from Alaska. It is a pretty laid back airport,
however it does have a tower during the day and
being Class D airspace, does require a radio to
enter the airspace and land. It's 6,750 foot
paved runway shouldn't require any short field
landing techniques. Traffic is generally very
light with only an occasional commuter jet and
students in pattern.
This should be an efficient place to clear customs.
Unlike Canadian customs, many find US customs folks
less than pleasant regardless whether you are a
returning American, Canadian or from anywhere else.
You might contact the Bellingham customs office
directly for more info: (360) 734-5463.
Potentially on the downside, Bellingham is so close
to Chilliwack that just about the time your wheels
leave the ground, you'll be entering the pattern
at Bellingham. Maybe this is good if you were
planning to top off on fuel. Current avgas prices
in the Northwest are about $2.25-$2.50 (US dollars)
per gallon.
Here are two other possibilities: Everett or
Friday Harbor.
Everett is further along on your flight from
Chilliwack to Roslyn: about half way. It has
the same Class D airspace as Bellingham and a
tower during the day. If Bellingham's runway
wasn't long enough, Everett (Paine Field) has
a 9,010 foot runway. This is one of the area's
Boeing assembly plants. They assemble and paint
in final customer colors, 747s, 777s, 767s and
I believe 737s. The ramp has jets lined up for
final delivery. Fun place to land and the
airport is only hectic during afternoons and
weekends. Lot's of training flights, lot's of
GA airplanes based here. And the occasional
747 on short final. I would definitely call
local customers office prior to arrival as
I believe someone makes a special effort to
meet you: (425) 259-0246.
More fun, but slightly out of the way and requiring
water overflight (max shore to shore is 4-5 miles)
would be Friday Harbor in the San Juans Islands.
No tower, regular size 3,400 foot paved runway,
short walk into town for food. Friday Harbor is
also a major port of entry for thousands of
private boats going between the US and Canada,
float planes going to/from Vancouver Island, Alaska
or coastal B.C. And it is popular for private
wheel-based planes too. It is generally quiet
in the mornings, but very hectic on sunny summer
weekends. My experience with customs here coming
in on a boat was that they were much more pleasant
than the average US customs agent. Local contact
is: (360) 378-2080. There is fuel available,
but expect a higher price. When you leave Friday
Harbor for Roslyn, going direct will take you
through Class C airspace requiring Mode C
transponder. Or, you can fly around which is not
much of a delay.

I suspect it'll be Bellingham, since it doesn't sound as intimidating
as it looks on the map :-) We often find aiports that LOOK like
they'd really be busy - aren't ! This sounds like a good one.

but ... no transponders and maybe a few NORDO's ...)
