CHT/EGT

Post by Mike Betti » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:03 am

Builders,
I was wondering on a Lycoming 0360 carb, fixed, in my Elite about CHT/EGTs. I want to add a single probe to measure each. Is there a favored cylinder that will get the job done? I really don't want to go through the expense of monitoring all 4. I believe once the initial time is flown off I should know if I have heating issues and then it won't be so important of a gauge anymore.
It was nice to meet Al and Nigel at Air Adventure. I enjoyed looking at Al's plane for ideas. Al, where did you get those sun visors?
Thanks,
Mike Betti

CHT/EGT

I agree with Alan that the value extends well past simple leaning and cooling determination. We have installed the KS Avionics Tetra series. It has full time monitoring of all four cylinders on either EGT or CHT. Shock cooling alarm is included as well as other alarms. Used properly it alerts to such events as fouled plug, magneto/ignition wiring failure, stuck valve, cracked rings, and insufficient cooling. It may alert early enough to avoid a real panic or major engine damage. See their website at ksavionics.com for more info.
