[rebel-builders] CHTs and EGT

Post by Clay Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:53 am

Hi Bruce,
After reading some more from the archives and receiving responses like yours
I'm beginning to believe that I don't really have a cooling problem. I'll
just keep an eye on it for now.
My EGT is still really high (around 1550) and as suggested earlier by
another group member it's likely caused by probe placement in my Forsling
stainless steel exhaust. I wonder if it would help if I were to remove the
probes bend 45 degrees and re-insert bent away from the cylinders?

Clay,

I have the fiber glass cowl and one of my my CHT temps runs 420 all the
time above 2500 RPM. I understand your exite air should be 150% of the
inlet. Walter reduced his CHT's by enlarging his inlet after having
enlarged his exite without good resolts. If your oil temps are good I
don't think your 400 or 420 CHT is all that bad. Glider Tow planes run 450
CHT all the time without any problems. I have 200 hours and my cyl.
compression has not changed. Lycoming says 450 and below is OK. 500 is
max.

Hi Guys,
I have some concerns about my CHTs still being a little too high on high
power settings (above 2500 rpm) even after 5 hrs on a rebuilt 0320 with a
metal cowl. They run around 390 and as high as 420 on # 2 which is the
front pilot side. Oil temp is good around 185. My guess would be that
the bottom exit open is not big enough. So, my question is which is the
best way to correct this? I could cut back (actually cut forward) the
bottom cowl metal to make a bigger opening (I do have a lip on the bottom
trailing edge already) or, maybe I could place some kind of grill openings
further forward? I'm sure some of you have already gone through this and
may have some advice. I did block off the oil cooler scat hose input on
the rear baffle some to increase the oil temp and this did seem to lower
the # 2 a little, but not enough.

Thanks for any help.

Clay

[rebel-builders] CHTs and EGT

Clay,

Your type of EGT probe should have come with specific direction for the proper mounting like location and distance from cyl. This is important for accurate readings.

[rebel-builders] CHTs and EGT

Post by Clay Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:53 am

Thanks Bruce, I think that there was a min/max range like 4 to 6 " away from
the cylinder but I'll have check to make sure I got it right.

[rebel-builders] CHTs and EGT

Post by Bruce Georgen » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:53 am

Clay,

My EGT's run about 1400 when full rich and can be raised as high as 1600 when leaned, depending on how hard I push the 0320. I never run it that high but it will go there. I try and keep it at 1460 which is usually about 50 below peak EGT. I have an Ellission Throttle Body Carb at factory recomended settings.

[rebel-builders] CHTs and EGT

Post by steve whitenect » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:53 am

Clay
I understand that the ring probe is as much as 50* higher. I flew to Osh
last year with one and replaced it with a probe I bought from AS&S at their
store on the grounds. It read exactly 50* cooler in the same cyl. 375 to
325. Looks nicer than 375 in 34* temps. Hope to get my final inspection
this weekend and first flight next week. W & B and fuel flow test done
yesterday. Have to calibrate the flaperon travel and do something with that
F%&&(*&%@ tail wheel supplied by Murphy. Ordered a new Maule tundra wheel
which shud be here next week. Sure miss the Scott 3200 I had on my
Christavia but too pricey for me.

Hi Steve,
I should have spent the extra $ at time and ordered the CHT probes instead
of the "under the plug rings" along with the gauge. Sorry for that now.

Also, forgot to mention that I'm using the MAM tail wheel without any
problem (yet ...!) along with a steel (2 spring) tail spring that I got made
up at a local spring shop. Seems to work good.
Good luck with your final.

[rebel-builders] CHTs and EGT

Post by steve whitenect » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:56 am

Hi Clay
Got the bugs out of my tailwheel. Put an eye bolt upside down thru the
cable clevis and ran my chains back from there which gave me more travel to
kick out the steering lock. Have 6 hrs on now with 320 cht and 1350 egt 170
oil temps with 80 mineral oil. Air temps not really bad now 20-25 cel. Had
trouble with the flaperons not extending evenly but know what my problem is.
Flys level and hands off with a little reflex but as soon as u go past 0
flap, it loads up the control stick with left wing down. ( Wayne if ur
reading this, please join in). Have 20* of flaperon which slows nicely. Lost
Alvins message and was going to respond to it. Have the Prince prop also
and will be having a few words with Lonnie. Have the 74/45 p tip and have a
105 mph cruise at 2400 but will over rev if i get above 65 in the climb.
Need more pitch. He suggests the 74/45 for the 150 hp and the 74/47 for the
160. Think the 47 would fine for the 150 . Alvin is obviously too fine and
may benifet from what i have. Can't believe the take off with 0 flap and
the fine pitch prop.
Take care

[rebel-builders] CHTs and EGT

Post by Clay Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:59 am

Hi Steve,
I've been on the road lately (St. Anthony) and haven't had the time check
e-mail. I was flying again yesterday for 2.5 hrs and noticed that my CHTs
have lowered some more (7.5 total time) to about 400 on the hottest
cylinder, so I'm not concerned anymore. Oil temp is 195 on 26 degree days.
No problems there. I'm still struggling a little with the landings ...
they're safe ... but not always pretty ! I just need to spend more time in
the circuit. Hope you and Alvin get your Prince prop issues sorted out, I'm
still considering replacing my heavy McCauley instead of re-pitching when I
get ZZO on floats next year.
Off to Toronto next week to see the inlaws :o(
