(rebel) fuel balance

Post by Garry Wright » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:56 am

I have been having some difficulty with drawing faster from the left
tank than the right on FOKM in the past 6 months, although it did have a
tendency to that when I first bought her in Nov 04. This tendency has
been getting worse in the past year. Wayne did not notice an appreciable
differential when he used the airplane.

FOKM's fuel system has sealed caps(except for overpressure), a vent line
between tanks and a ram air snorkle on the left side at the vent line.

I discovered that if I swapped the two gas caps, the differential all
but disappeared. My conclusion is that the cap that was on the right was
not airtight (nor fuel tight for that matter) and inspection of the
rubber seals shows considerable deterioration in the rubber over the 14
years of service.

Now the problem is to find new rubber seals for the old caps. These are
the traditional protruding caps and while I haven't yet exhaustively
searched for new ones, I do know they aren't in the obvious places.
Anybody have any ideas?

Garry
