I used metal wiring feedthroughs that you can buy at any hardware store.
They come in various sizes and have a bulkhead fitting with a nut. Quick,
easy, and inexpensive. I smeared some high temp RTV on the bulkhead threads
before I tightened the nut to act as locktight. You can squish some more
RTV around the wires when you're done if you want some extra fire protection
and anti-chafing.

Hi All

What's the best way to get your battery to starter wiring through the
stainless firewall . I gather a hole with a grommet in it is acceptable, but
is there a more robust way with less chance of eventual eroding of the cable
insulation ? I'm happy with low current or wiring with a CB to trip using a
grommet, but the starter supply cable runs straight from the battery and
could seriously ruin your afternoon if it shorted to the firewall.
Any ideas ?

Many of those are pot metal that will melt even before aluminum although
the RTV will be gone even before that so such an arrangement may not
provide much fire protection if that is important to someone. I'd
suggest finding steel parts and using a better sealant for anyone
wishing to maintain a fire resistant stainless firewall.

http://www.epm-avcorp.com/tubeseal.html is an example of a fire proven
method. The aeroelectric site has directions for a DIY version made from
a steel or stainless grab handle / towel rack. I put all my wires (I had
a lot of them) through a 1.25" diameter tube. Itumescent fire caulk is
very superior to RTV for fire resistance. I've previously posted the
part number of a suitable product or ASS sells one or the aeroelectric
site probably mentions one. Fire rated silicone caulk didn't last any
longer than red RTV when I put a flame to it. Even wood has a fire
rating - it just isn't a very good rating ;)
