Rebel C-GZZO flys!

Post by Clay Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:39 am

I wanted to let everyone know that C-GZZO took to the skies for the first time over the Gander airport last week. The take-off and cruise performance was really impressive with only gentle control inputs necessary once the elevator trim was set. At straight and level I let go of the stick, eased my feet off the rudder pedals and smiled ...what a nice little airplane to fly ...!!
I did place 45 lbs of weight in the baggage area thinking that I might be a little nose heavy with the firewall not cut back, an 0320, metal prop and an Odyssey 680 battery in the back ... but it just wasn't needed. This first flight lasted an hour at mostly high rpm settings as recommended by the engine re-build people. Oil temp was a little on the low side I think (170 at cruise with the oil cooler on the firewall and an in-line remote filter installed) and my cylinder head temps at high rpms were at 375 to around 420 on the hottest cylinder. EGT readings on all 4 cylinders were also high at full rich, as much as 1550 at full throttle. Anyone else notice this with the Westac gauge and stainless steel exhaust? I can further increase the EGT with mixture leaning so I don't think that I'm running too lean at the full rich setting. I'll have to investigate this some more.

My sincere thanks to the many members of this group who have dedicated so much of their time and efforts in answering questions and giving helpful advise. And finally...to those of you who still have a ways to go and are perhaps wondering if all this time and money is really worth it. Well, keep cutting, filing, drilling and pulling rivets because your building an absolutely wonderful airplane and will soon be the envy of all your pilot friends. It is worth it !!
