tail wheel springs

Installing the springs, chains from rudder to tail wheel. Should there be any slack in the chains?

Mike,

While building the Rebel, this question also came up. I tried the chains both ways, done up tight with no slack, then with chains slightly slack.

I found that with the chains done tight it made the tailwheel overly sensitive with every movement of the rudder peddles.

I loosened the chains slightly, found taxiing much smoother.

I recieved with my kit the tundra tire option which included a pnuematic
tail wheel assembly.

What I really should have asked is what springs.

If you are going to go with the "door closer" compression springs like
Maule's usually use I highly suggest you don't! But if you do be sure they
are quite loose so that when you get stuck in mud and floor a rudder pedal
you don't crack/bend/break the tail wheel steering horns from when the
springs bottom out and the tire won't turn.

If you go with tension springs they should be almost tight. Very slight bow
in the chains due to the weight of the large tension spring twisting it
downward...not much else for looseness or you won't get enough travel to
kick the free swivel detent out.

Interesting,
Wayne, the springs I have are compression door closer type and I thought they were pretty stiff like you say. I will try and come up with some tension springs, if have a suggested source or size let me know.
With the set up I have now, with no slack in chain, full rudder, I can't break the swivel free. It's close to breaking free but doesn't and that's with out the spring even compressing. Shouldn't the pivot break free at full rudder? I have a good 25 degrees of travel in the rudder, about 1" or 2 from hitting the elevator. When I get home tonight I will have to check the bolt centers of the rudder horn verses the tail wheel horn, maybe there not proportional. Also, the kit gives me that old time home heating system chains for connection.

You'll get a similar (but one gauge heavier) sash chain with a Scott 3200
install kit as well Mike. The best tension springs are the 3200 install kit
(one spring has a 1/4 turn more spring to stop harmonics)...but there are
some a tad smaller that I have used with success off the shelf from Princess
Auto. The chain you have will be fine...carry a couple 1/8" quick links in
your survival kit in case it gives or a clip gives.

I haven't played with MAM's larger tailwheel...so would rather not comment
on how/when it should kick out.
